How Long Does a Furnace Usually Last?
Posted On: June 28, 2021

Your furnace is one of the essential parts of your home. It helps keep you warm in the winter and cool in the summer. And as a homeowner, you are probably wondering how long your furnace will last?

A furnace can last anywhere from 15-20 years, depending on how well it's maintained, and most furnace companies provide some extended warranty. Even though the life span can last this long, it's essential to start thinking of replacing your furnace once it reaches that 15-year mark.

In the meantime, there are a few ways to keep your furnace in top shape during its lifespan.

  • Size: The size of your furnace should be appropriate for your home. A small home requires only a small furnace, where a larger home needs a bigger one.
  • Filter: Frequently changing your furnace's filter will help keep your furnace in working order. A furnace filter should be changed every three months, or less depending on if you own pets.
  • Temperature: Keeping your thermostat at a suitable range, not too hot or cold, around 68 F to 72 F, will help extend the life of your furnace.
  • Routine servicing: Although it's not required, it's recommended that you should have your furnace inspected and serviced by a professional at least once a year.
  • Maintenance: Regular maintenance of your furnace, such as cleaning the unit and sealing any leaky ducts, will pay off in the long run.

A few signs that your furnace is nearing the end of its life include strange noises, high energy bills, blowing cold air while on heat, uneven temperatures, and more.

If you find that your furnace is nearing the expectancy or you're experiencing any one of the signs mentioned, contact Appliance Helpers. We can help you get in touch with a furnace expert in your area.
