How often do I need to tune up my furnace
Posted On: January 3, 2022

As the winter weather rolls in, the colder weather comes with it. Cold weather means that your furnace will be running more frequently, especially if your winter months are rough. And if you change your filters every 90 days or less and regularly maintain your furnace, it will last through the winter season.

So, how often should you tune up your furnace? HVAC experts recommend annual tune-ups to keep your furnace in top shape throughout its lifespan. Most furnaces will last 15 to 20 years with proper maintenance.

HVAC specialists recommend that you schedule the tune-up in the spring and fall before the cold weather sets in. During this routine, the furnace technician will inspect the pilot light, heat exchange, ductwork, and other vital parts. They will also run a safety check to ensure it's okay to use.

If the technician finds anything wrong, they will quickly fix the issue before it becomes a larger issue. And if your furnace is older, they can determine whether it needs repairs or replacing.

There are other benefits to furnace tune-ups that aren't just about safety, and they include.

  1. Avoid costly expenses: A technician can spot any minor issues and repair them before they become a bigger problem which will mean more costs to repair.
  2. Increase energy efficiency: If you have noticed your energy bills have increased, then your furnace is the likely culprit. The technician will look for and repair any issues raising your energy bills during an inspection.
  3. Extend furnace life expectancy: Regular tune-ups will help prolong the life expectancy of your furnace. They can help prevent you from replacing your furnace earlier than you should.

Some people feel the need to attempt tune-ups themselves. Unless you are a trained professional, you should never perform any repairs or maintenance yourself, especially with a gas furnace. The only thing you should be doing yourself is replacing your furnace filter.

Ideal furnace filters for homes have a MERV rating of 5-12. Anything above that is reserved for larger buildings such as hospitals, labs, retirement homes. Anything less than a rating of five will not keep much dust and debris from the air.

So, when it's time for your furnace to have a tune-up contact and you don't already have an HVAC specialist, contact Appliance Helpers. We can help you find an HVAC specialist in your area. Visit our website for more information on our services and how to get in touch with us.
