How to Remove Scratches from Stainless Steel Appliances
Posted On: August 19, 2025

Hey everyone, welcome back to Appliance Helpers. Today we’re going to tackle one of the most common problems with stainless steel appliances—scratches. Whether it’s your fridge, oven, or dishwasher, scratches can be frustrating. But the good news is, with a few simple tools and the right technique, you can make them almost disappear. Let’s get started.

First, take a close look at the scratch. Light, surface-level scratches can usually be buffed out with just a few household items. Deeper scratches might take a bit more effort, but you can still improve the look significantly.

Here’s what you’ll need:

A microfiber cloth.

A non-abrasive cleaner or mild dish soap.

Stainless steel polish or olive oil.

And for deeper scratches, a scratch removal kit or very fine-grit sandpaper—something like 600 to 800 grit.

That’s it. Nothing fancy, and most of this you probably already have at home.

Start by cleaning the area around the scratch. Dirt and grime can make scratches worse if you rub them in. Just use a bit of mild soap and water, then dry the surface completely with a microfiber cloth.

Here’s the number one rule: always work with the grain of the stainless steel. If you go against the grain, you’ll just create more scratches. So find the direction of those fine lines and follow them.

For light scratches, apply a small amount of stainless steel polish—or even olive oil—onto your cloth.

Gently rub along the grain until the scratch starts to blend in. Wipe away any excess, and you’ll see an immediate improvement.

If the scratch is deeper, you’ll need a bit more power. Use a stainless steel scratch-removal kit, or very fine-grit sandpaper designed for metal. Start gently, applying even pressure, and always move in the direction of the grain. Take your time—don’t rush it.

Afterward, polish the area again to restore the shine.

And there you have it—your stainless steel appliance looking much better, without the distraction of scratches. With just a few simple steps, you can extend the life and beauty of your kitchen appliances.
