Kenmore dryer not starting Repair help questions
Posted On: March 21, 2023

My Kenmore dryer started tripping the breaker on some settings and then just stopped working while we were testing it on low setting without tripping the breaker. The 240v outlet was replaced with a new one. The dryer thermal fuse was replaced.

The three terminals are more what's in question.

When touching the multimeter to the terminal 1 and 2, results in a reading of barely above zero.

When touching terminal 1 and 3, it results in 40v.

When touching terminal 2 and 3, it results in 120v.

Does this mean there's a problem with the terminals?

Is there still a problem with the outlet?

Is there a different issue I'm not seeing?

Thanks for your help.

Answer:

If your Kenmore dryer is not starting, there are several possible causes. Here are some questions to ask yourself to help troubleshoot the issue:

  1. Is the dryer plugged in? It may seem obvious, but double-check that the dryer is properly plugged into an electrical outlet.

  2. Is the circuit breaker tripped? Check your home's circuit breaker to see if the breaker for the dryer has tripped. If it has, reset the breaker and try starting the dryer again.

  3. Is the door fully closed? The dryer will not start if the door is not fully closed. Make sure the door is securely closed and try starting the dryer again.

  4. Is the timer set correctly? Check that the timer is set to a cycle that will allow the dryer to start. Some dryer models have safety features that prevent the dryer from starting if the timer is not set correctly.

  5. Is the start switch or button working properly? Check that the start switch or button is working properly. You may need to replace the switch or button if it is faulty.

  6. Is the thermal fuse blown? A blown thermal fuse can prevent the dryer from starting. You can check the thermal fuse with a multimeter to see if it has continuity. If it does not, replace the thermal fuse.

If you are unable to identify the problem or are uncomfortable with attempting a repair, it is recommended to seek the help of a professional appliance repair technician.
