Looking for some help diagnosing Samsung fridge issue
Posted On: April 10, 2023

I have a 5 year old Samsung fridge (model # rf28hdedbsr) that's starting to act up. The fridge is running warm, fluctuating between mid 50 to mid 60 degrees Fahrenheit. Freezer is working great, no issues there. I removed the cover in the back of the inside of the fridge to find the area above the condenser pretty well frosted over. The fan wasn't spinning so i disconnected the fan and applied 12v to it to test it and it works but when connected to the fridge the fan doesn't fire up.

I'm wondering if my problem might be the control board not turning the fan on or maybe more specifically the fan relay on the control board? Or could it be the defrost sensor? I've read that they can go bad if they get frozen like this.

I defrosted the ice with a hairdryer and reconnected everything. The fridge is once again returning to normal operating temperatures but the fan is still not functioning. Desperate for some ideas, would love to repair it rather than trashing it!.

Answer:

Based on the symptoms you described, it is likely that the issue with your Samsung fridge is related to the fan not turning on. It's possible that the control board is not sending the signal to the fan to turn on, or that the fan relay on the control board is faulty.

Another possibility is that the defrost sensor is malfunctioning. The defrost sensor is designed to detect the buildup of frost on the evaporator coils and signal the control board to activate the defrost cycle. If the sensor is not working properly, it may not be detecting the frost buildup, which could cause the evaporator coils to become excessively frosted and block the airflow to the fridge compartment.

To diagnose the issue more accurately, you may want to try testing the control board and defrost sensor using a multimeter. You can also check the continuity of the fan motor to ensure that it is functioning properly. If you are not familiar with using a multimeter, it may be best to consult with a qualified appliance repair technician who has experience working on Samsung refrigerators.

Overall, based on the symptoms you described, it seems like the issue is likely related to the fan not turning on. If you are able to pinpoint the specific cause of the problem, it may be possible to repair the fridge and avoid having to replace it.
