My Refrigerator Stopped Working

My Refrigerator Stopped Working
Posted On: July 5, 2021

It's one of every homeowners' worst scenarios. Their refrigerator suddenly stops working. A broken fridge is more than an inconvenience, and depending on how long it has stopped cooling, it can result in a loss of money due to food spoilage.

But before you go out and buy a new refrigerator which means more money out of your pocket, here are a few things you can use to troubleshoot your fridge.

  • Check the plug: Though it may seem like the obvious thing to look for, sometimes things somehow get unplugged when we are not looking. So if the light doesn't come on when you open the door, it could just be unplugged.
  • Check the thermostat: Look to see if the thermostat has been turned up too high. An average temperature for a fridge should be below 40, ˚F about 35 ˚F to 38 ˚F.
  • Check the vents: If your freezer is full. There could be something blocking the vents that are causing poor circulation.
  • Check the condenser fan and coils: Dirt, dust, and debris can build up over time and find a way into the coils and condenser fan, which can cause both to stop working. To clean it out, unplug your fridge and take a vacuum to the back of it. Then plug it back in when you are done.

If you try these things and your fridge still isn't working, then it's time to call in a professional. At Appliance Helpers, we can assist you in finding a refrigerator specialist. And if they determine that you need a new one, we can help you with that as well.
