What is a CFM rating and how much do I need
Posted On: January 31, 2022

You more than likely haven't come across the abbreviations CFM in your daily routine. CFM stands for Cubic Feet per Minute. It's a type of measurement used to calculate the amount of airflow through fans.

Usually, this type of measurement is associated with an exhaust fan. CFM can also be used for bathroom fans, commercial fans, air compressors, and anything else that has airflow.

In the case of oven exhausts, there are specific required measurements. Factors that affect the measurements are the type of range and size.

Gas ranges require a higher CFM than electric ranges as they emit more fumes. You can calculate the CFM by dividing your oven's BTUs by 100.

For example, if your oven has a BTU rating of 90,000. You will need a range hood with a rating of 900 CFM.

If you frequently cook, especially greasy foods, you should consider a higher CFM rating than 900.

Since electric ranges don't give off a lot of exhaust and fumes, they do not need a high CFM range. Electric range hoods start as low as 600 and go as high as 1200.

To put that into perspective, stoves that range from 30" to 42" need a hood with a CFM rating of 600. In comparison, a large 60" oven requires a hood rating of 1200 CFM.

Like the gas range hoods, if you are an avid cook and have a small oven, you should choose a higher CFM. Higher CFM hoods also last longer and have a high and low fan setting.

The size of your kitchen will also determine the CFM rating. It is recommended that the range be larger than the cooktop. Bigger kitchens should have larger range hoods. Range hoods should be at least six inches larger than the stovetop.

Ductwork is the final determination in the CFM rating. The rating is measured by the feet of ductwork, turns and whether it's vented through the roof.

Sometimes you will see range hoods with a CFH rating. CFH stands for Cubic Feet per Hour. The number you see on a CFH rating will be much higher than the CFM rating. 60 times larger because there are 60 minutes in an hour.

CFH ratings are more commonly seen in anything that uses gas.
