What is the difference between a range and an oven?
Posted On: August 2, 2021

When it comes to appliances, one of the most important ones is the one that cooks your food, whether it's a range or an oven. But wait, don't they mean the same thing? The answer depends on how a person was brought up. Some people refer to ovens as stoves, while others say ovens or ranges.

These terms can get confusing, especially in a conversation. But there are a few differences between the terms range and oven.

Pretty much anything can be considered an oven, as it's simply a box that uses heat to cook food, and a source of heat can be anything, from an open fire to a toaster oven and an industrial oven. So, what about the heat source outside the oven? What do we call those? Those are called stoves or stovetops.

Much like their oven counterparts, they can use any heat source for cooking food. Often it's the exact source of heat. But sometimes, stoves can serve as a heat source for a room, and a means to cook food. These stoves can use coal, wood, or pellets.

Stoves can also be portable, and some people refer to these as camping stoves or cooktops.

So, what exactly is a range? Well, a range is a unit that has both an oven and a stovetop. Ranges are the most commonly sold appliances in the United States.

There isn't much of a difference between the terms range and oven when it comes down to it. It's all in a matter of personal preference. Most of the time, when you talk about an oven, chances are the person you are speaking with knows what you mean.
