Why are smaller fridges MORE expensive?
Posted On: May 24, 2023

I'm looking at a new fridge, and it's just myself and my girlfriend.

We don't store a lot of things, so we don't need one of these huge "Family Fridges" and a smaller one would fit better in the kitchen anyways because the current one sticks out way past the counter and it looks kind of ugly - but all the ones that are shorter and have less depth are somehow 3-4 times more than the giant ones?

Am I just looking at the wrong stores? This doesn't make any sense to me.

Question from user PotentialStrange5465 at Appliances at reddit.

Answer:

So I am a bit of a counter depth fridge fanatic and think "standard" depth fridges 9 out of 10 times significantly detract from a kitchen.

People tend to buy counter depth fridges because they look better.

It's not a purchase of necessity.

Thus the price that can be charged is essentially higher because they're literally being purchased as a premium option, even if slightly premium.

I personally don't hesitate and love a counter depth fridge.

Standard depth ones are too deep and the extra storage is overkill for the typical family.

You think you need the space until you don't have it and you don't need it.
