Why will my oven not heat up
Posted On: December 13, 2021

It's a scenario nobody wants to find themselves in. They go to cook something for dinner or dessert only to find that their oven has not heated up. Depending on the type of oven you have, gas or electric, there are a few reasons why it is on but won't heat.

For a gas range, the problem could lie with the igniter. If the burners and the oven have stopped working, there may be an issue with the gas line. Gas line issues require a professional. Never attempt to fix a gas line yourself without proper knowledge. But if the problem is your ignitor, then you could fix it yourself.

To locate the ignitor, remove the drawer underneath the oven and use a screwdriver to remove the switch. Replace the old switch with a new one.

You can easily replace the element with a new one for electric ovens. However, if your element is hidden, you may need to call a repair person.

Remember to always unplug any appliance or electronic if you plan any repairs.

If the oven isn't heating to the right temperature, it could mean there's a problem with the temperature sensor. Replace any faulty sensors. You can use an ohmmeter to check if there is power going to it. If everything is okay, then you may need to reset the oven.

To reset the oven:

  1. Heat the oven to 350 F°.
  2. Check the stove every twenty minutes for the next two hours.
  3. After the two hours, add the temperature readings and divide them by the number of recordings. The number you calculated is the average oven temperature.
  4. Modify the dial according to the average temperature.

If you're still unsure and need help, it's always best to call in a professional.

Every oven works differently, and if you find that it's heating up but cooking unevenly, then the issue can be as simple as the placement of your oven racks or your cookware. Be sure to give any cookware a deep clean after every use. And adjust your oven racks accordingly to what you are cooking. Some meals and desserts need a specific oven rack position to cook evenly.
