Fridge is leaking

Fridge is leaking
Posted On: October 18, 2021

If you notice a puddle near your fridge and it's not from someone spilling something, then the issue could be coming from various areas in your fridge. A leaky fridge can not only cause slips and falls, but it can also damage your floors and pose a shock hazard.

Before starting any repairs or calling a technician, the first step is indicating where the leak is coming from.

  1. Inside: If the leak is coming from the inside, there could be an issue with the defroster drain line. Fridges are constantly freezing and defrosting, which produces excess moisture that can freeze and clog the drain. Once the water starts building up, it finds its way out onto the floor. You can fix this yourself by locating the drain tube in the crisper and flushing it with water. Otherwise, contact a technician.
  2. Rear: Water leaking from behind the fridge could be caused by the water and ice maker line (if your fridge has one). Fixing this issue requires a technician. But you can check where the problem is coming from before you call, be sure to unplug the fridge to avoid the risk of electrical shock. Now, look for any wet joints, water running down the pipe and on the floor. Many of these issues can be caused by a faulty solenoid switch, valve failure or a water filter connection.
  3. Bottom center: Drain pans prevent water from collecting inside the fridge during the defrost cycle. Sometimes they can become cracked, damaged or improperly installed, causing the water to leak out on the floor. Pull out the pan to inspect it for any issues. Damaged pans need replacing to avoid electric shocks.
  4. Front: Similar to what happens inside, a clogged drain tube can cause water to leak out of the fridge and puddle in front of the unit.

Other issues that can cause your fridge to leak are door seal issues. If the fridge door cannot close properly, the refrigerator will constantly run and cause condensation to build up, and water can leak onto the floor.

Damaged or loose ice maker tubes can also cause water to leak from your fridge. To find if this is the issue, take a look at the back of your fridge to see if any tubes have become loose or kinked.

Remember, it's always best to call a technician when something goes wrong with your appliances before fixing them yourself. The people at Appliance Helpers can help find you an expert in your area. Visit our website for more information on how to get in touch with us.
