How do dishwashers work
Posted On: November 1, 2021

Dishwashers save you time by washing your dishes for you. But have you stopped to think about how dishwashers work? How do these machines make our dishes sparkling clean?

For dishwashers to work effectively, they must be loaded correctly. This means cups and glasses on the top rack and plates, pots, pans, and other heavier dishes on the bottom. Place the dirtiest dishes towards the center of the unit where the jets are located. And never place plastics at the bottom as the element could melt them.

A good detergent and rinsing agent also helps with the dishwashing process. Never use regular dish soap as it will overflow the unit.

Dishwashers are controlled by a small computer and a series of sensors and go through various steps to ensure the dishes are clean. The first step is the water is added and then heated to the right temperature. After the water, the detergent tray will open, and then the spray arms will start to clean the dishes.

Dirty water is drained, and then the spray arms will rinse the dishes and then drain again. Once the clean cycle is finished, the dishwasher will heat the air to dry the dishes.

The sensors in your dishwasher have different functions. One is to detect the water and air temperature to prevent overheating and damage to your dishes. Another one is to detect the amount of water in the unit to avoid overflowing if the water level is too high. There are even some dishwashers with sensors to notice how dirty the water is. Once the water is clear, the unit knows the dishes are clean.

Dishwashers don't fill with water, and only a small amount is added to the bottom of the unit. Then the heating element heats the water, and a pump moves to the spray arms, which rotate to clean the dishes.

Any food particles are collected in a filter or dissolved into small pieces. After the dishwasher is done, the water is moved out of the unit through the pipes under the sink.

Did you know that Josephine Cochrane invented the dishwasher in 1886? And introduced her water and spray unit at the 1893 Chicago World's Fair. Eventually, she founded the company Kitchenaid.
