How Do I Know If Something Is Microwave Safe?

The microwave is one of the appliances you regularly use, whether at home or work. It's a convenient and quick way to cook or reheat food, but before you heat that leftover meatloaf, you should be checking if the dish you are using is microwave-safe or not. 


One of the most common ways to determine microwave-safe dishes is to look for the microwave-safe symbol on the bottom of the container. This symbol is represented by a picture of a microwave with wavy lines. 


Plastic containers are usually the go-to when storing leftovers, but it's essential to know that not all of these containers are best to use in the microwave, while they don't pose the same hazard as something with metal in it. For example, some plastic containers contain chemicals that can leach into your food when heated up. So how do you know which plastic containers are safe? Look for the PP5 symbol on the bottom. That means the plastic is safe to use in the microwave. 


Try to stay away from reheating your food in takeout containers like styrofoam clamshells, as these types of containers are not meant to be reheated. 


Glass containers such as Pyrex, Corningware, and Tupperware are the safest storage containers for reheating your food. But be sure to look for that microwave-safe symbol at the bottom before placing your dish into the microwave.
