How many different types of water heaters are there
Posted On: January 31, 2022

When it comes to water heaters, there are five different types. Each of them does the same thing, and there are pros and cons to each water heater type.

Let's start with the most common water heater found in every home, the conventional water heater. Most commonly referred to as a tank water heater, the water in these tanks is heated with gas or electricity.

When the stored hot water gets low, it is refilled and heated again. Depending on the age of your tank, the heating process can take a while, which can be inconvenient, especially if the water runs out while you're in the shower.

Tank water heaters are also bulky, more vulnerable to water damage, and less energy efficient.

There are some advantages to a tank water heater, such as installation costs, and they are suitable for homes in any climate.

Tankless water heaters are becoming popular and are showing up in newer homes. With this style of water heater, warm water is available instantly as the water is warmed with super-heated coils as it moves through the pipes.

Since there is no tank to fill and refill, hot water is always there when it's needed.

The other benefits to a tankless water heater are energy efficiency, space savers and lower energy costs.

While you have hot water instantly, they aren't suitable for larger families as you can run out of hot water quickly if someone is showering and using the dishwasher or washing machine simultaneously. They are costly to install.

Heat pump water tanks work by drawing heat from the air, either from the basement or outside. The air is then moved into the tank to warm the water. Since they rely on warm air, these heaters are not suitable for cooler climates. However, they do use less energy than conventional water tanks.

Some heat pump water tanks can be paired with conventional water tanks.

Solar water heaters harness the sun's power to heat the water stored, and because of this, they are eco-friendly and can lower your energy bills. While they are energy-efficient, solar heaters require the sun to work, so they are best suited for sunny climates. Solar water heaters are costly to install and need lots of roof space.

However, some states may offer a tax credit if you install one.

Condensing water heaters work similarly to heat pumps as they use the heat exhaust that is usually removed from the home and redirect it to the water heater. These types of heaters are better for the environment, cheaper to run, and hot water is available instantly.

While condensing water heaters are cheaper to run, they are expensive to install, are larger than other water tanks, and require home renovations such as redirection of gas and vent lines.
