How to Clean the Microwave
Posted On: September 13, 2020

It doesn’t take much to turn a sparkling clean microwave into a disgusting, smelly mess. It could be from a round of leftovers or a burnt bag of popcorn. The secret to keeping your microwave clean is regular maintenance, at least once every few days. Luckily for you, we have some easy-to-follow tips on how to effectively clean a microwave.

You can clean your microwave with everyday supplies found around the house, including baking soda, vinegar, and dish soap. Make sure you stay away from bleach, as it weakens the plastic interior and damages the appliance in the long-run.

How to Clean the Inside
The combination of splatters and smells can leave your microwave looking pretty rough. To clean its interior, follow this step-by-step process.
1. Combine 1 cup of water and lemon, lime, or orange slices (squeeze the juice from the fruit into the water) into a microwave-safe-bowl. If you have white or apple cider vinegar on hand, combine a few tablespoons with 1 cup of water into a microwave-safe-bowl.
2. Place the bowl inside the microwave and turn it on high power for a few minutes until the mixture boils and the window gets steamed up.
3. Let it cool for 5 minutes before reopening the door, then remove the bowl and wipe the inside clean with a sponge.

How to Clean Microwave Doors
The inside isn’t the only thing to be concerned about. You can remove smudges and grease from the microwave’s exterior by following these simple tips.
1. Clean the gasket around the door with a sponge that’s been dampened with water and dipped in a little bit of baking soda. Wipe with a damp cloth or sponge to rinse.
2. For a greasy window, clean with a 50/50 mixture of water and vinegar. Rinse and wipe dry.
3. If there’s been a heavy grease build-up, wipe your door down with a grease-cutting cleaner or a mixture of dish soap and water. Apply the cleaner with a cloth or sponge.

How to Get Rid of Smells
It’s best to get rid of odors right away. For light odors, air it out by leaving the door open or place a bowl of baking soda inside with the door closed so it can absorb smells. For stronger odours, remove any leftover residue and place an absorbing gel inside, such as Fresh Wave, until you run the microwave again.
