How to Maintain a Furnace?
Posted On: May 16, 2021

Your heating system is considered to be one of the largest expenses in your home, which is why it is important to keep your furnace in tip-top shape. Regular maintenance can ensure your furnace is running efficiently and will cut down on energy bills and repairs. Here are some ideas on how to maintain your furnace.

Check Your Filters

Filters are used to filter out dust, pollen, pet dander, bacteria, and more before moving into the furnace to be heated. If the airflow is blocked by a dirty air filter, your furnace won’t operate as efficiently. Inexpensive air filters should be changed every 30-90 days, while more expensive pleated air filters can last up to 3 months or longer.

Check your Blower Motor

Blower motors are used to drive the fan that provides air movement for your furnace. It helps to warm and distribute the air throughout your home. If the blower motor is not well maintained, it can cause your furnace to break down. If your blower motor is making a lot of noise, there may be an issue with the blower's electric motor or blower wheel.

Identify Sources of Heat Loss

It is important to check your home for any structural weaknesses which may allow cold air to seep in and warm air to leak out. Ensuring your home is properly sealed up will stop your furnace from working twice as hard to heat your home. Call an HVAC professional to perform a home energy audit to identify any sources of heat loss.

Free Up Your Vents

Household vents need to be clean and functional to circulate air efficiently in your home. Make sure all vents in your home are open, properly adjusted, and free of obstruction. A closed or blocked vent can cause your furnace to work harder than necessary and less efficiently.
