They live in Florida and the water destroys everything so it looks like crap.

Answer:

Old dishwashers used to have a weak garbage disposal built in — a spinning blade and metal mesh that was sometimes called “the chopper”. The problem is that they eventually wear down and then the dishwasher clogs every few loads. Plus they are noisy and the new trend is for whisper silent dishwashers.


These new strainer baskets have much larger surface area and are supposed to go about a month between cleanings, though if you put anything crazy messy in the dishwasher you might just want to clean it next cycle.
