Refrigerator Light Bulbs: How to Replace and Save Energy
Posted On: September 2, 2025

Hey everyone, welcome back to Appliance Helpers! If your fridge light just burned out, or you’re looking for a way to save a little energy, this video is for you.

Today, we’re going to show you how to replace your refrigerator light bulb safely, and share some tips on upgrading to energy-efficient bulbs that can lower your power bill.

Step 1: Safety first
Alright, step number one—safety first. Before you do anything, unplug your refrigerator or turn off the breaker. It only takes a second, and it keeps you safe while working near electrical components.

Step 2: Find the bulb
Next, locate the light bulb inside your refrigerator. Most bulbs are either in the ceiling, along the sides, or sometimes behind a protective cover. If you see a small plastic shield, you may need to gently pop it off or unscrew it.

Step 3: Remove the old bulb
Once you’ve got access, carefully unscrew the old bulb. Just turn it counterclockwise until it comes loose. If it’s stuck, don’t force it too hard—sometimes a gentle wiggle helps.

Step 4: Choose the right replacement
Now, here’s the important part—choosing the right replacement. Most fridges use a standard 40-watt appliance bulb, but check your owner’s manual or the label near the socket to be sure.

The key is to use a bulb designed for appliances. Regular household bulbs may not handle the cold and vibration inside a fridge.

Step 5: Go energy-efficient
Here’s where you can save energy. Instead of the old incandescent bulb, consider switching to an LED appliance bulb. LEDs use way less power, last much longer, and they don’t give off heat like traditional bulbs.

That means your fridge doesn’t have to work as hard to stay cool—saving you even more energy.

Step 6: Install the new bulb
Once you’ve got the right bulb, screw it in clockwise until it’s snug. Don’t overtighten it. If there was a cover, snap or screw it back into place.

Step 7: Power back on & test
Now, plug your refrigerator back in, open the door, and check out that new light! Bright, efficient, and good to go.

And that’s it—quick and easy. Replacing your refrigerator light bulb is one of the simplest DIY appliance fixes, and upgrading to an LED bulb can save you money over time.
