What does HVAC stand for
Posted On: December 20, 2021

If your home or business uses a furnace and central air, you've probably come across the word HVAC. And you're probably wondering what it means and how it relates to heating and cooling?

HVAC is an acronym for Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning. It's the system responsible for keeping your home comfortable whenever you use your gas furnace, heat pump, or air conditioner, by distributing the warm or cold air throughout your home via air ducts.

If you want your HVAC system to run efficiently, there are a few things you should consider: a high-quality thermostat and well-maintained ductwork.

Thermostats are like the brains of your HVAC system. It controls the temperature and lets the heating or cooling unit know when to run. You must set your thermostat to the temperature you are most comfortable with for this to happen.

The ideal temperature for any place is around 68 to 77℉. However, most homes set their thermostats to 72℉. The heating and cooling unit will kick in if the temperature falls below or above the set temperature.

Thermostats can range from manual to digital and even smart thermostats. Smart thermostats have become popular because they can be controlled when the homeowner is away from home via smartphones and even smart home devices. Some smart home devices even allow you to control your thermostat with your voice.

Well-maintained ductwork is essential not only for distributing hot and cool air throughout the home but for your family's health. It's recommended that you have your ductwork cleaned and inspected by an HVAC specialist every two to three years. They will clean your ducts and check and repair any cracks in the ductwork.

You should also change the furnace filter every 90 days or less depending on how often your unit is running and if you have any pets. With proper maintenance, a furnace can last 15 to 20 years, heat pumps 14 years, and a central air unit can last anywhere from 12 to 15 years.

The difference between a heat pump and a furnace is, a heat pump draws air from outside to heat or cool the home. These systems are recommended for those who live in milder climates.

Appliance Helpers can help you find an HVAC specialist in your area when it's time to have your ductwork, air conditioner, or heating system maintained. Visit our website for more information on our services and how to get in touch with us.
