Whats wrong with my furnace
Posted On: December 27, 2021

It's a scenario you never want to find yourself in, especially in the winter months. Your furnace suddenly stops working. A situation like this one can cause a lot of anxiety, especially when you don't know its cause.

But before you call in for a repair person, here are a few things you can check.

  1. Thermostat: One of the first things you should do is check to ensure your thermostat is on and set to heat. Next, check the batteries or that the breaker hasn't been tripped. Replace any dead batteries or rest the breaker.
  2. Clogged Filter: A clogged filter can cause the furnace to stop working. Remember furnace filters need to be changed every 90 days or less depending on how long it runs and any pets.
  3. Circuit breaker: Your furnace is connected to a circuit breaker like your thermostat. Check to make sure the breaker hasn't been tripped.
  4. Access Panel: If the furnace's access panel has come loose, the furnace will not start. Inspect all panels to ensure they are in the proper position.
  5. Circulation: For your furnace to work efficiently, it requires proper air circulation. Ensure nothing is blocking the unit and that all the vents are open.
  6. Dirty burners: Over time, furnace burners can collect dust and other debris, which can cause the furnace to stop working. To clean them, turn off the unit by the breaker and remove the access panels. Use a vacuum and brush to remove any dirt. Once clean, replace the access panels and return the power to the furnace.
  7. Faulty ignitor: The ignitor switch is responsible for sending the signal to turn the gas into heat. An issue with the control can cause the furnace to stop working or not work at all. You can check if it needs to be replaced by removing the access panels and inspecting the ignitor for any damages.

Call in a specialist if you have tried these things and are still having issues or are uncomfortable with removing the access panels. Remember never to attempt any repairs yourself unless you know how HVAC systems work.

Any attempts to repair any appliance without proper knowledge will worsen the situation and lead to dangerous consequences.
