Why is My Refrigerator Lightbulb Not Working?
Posted On: April 26, 2021

So you just open your refrigerator and noticed the light didn’t come on. However, you can still feel the cold temperature and hear the hum of your fridge. If your appliance is still working but the light is out, you have something that needs fixing. Today we’ll be going over the potential solutions to a refrigerator light that won’t come on.

Check the Door Switch
The first thing you should check is the door switch. It’s a small triangular-shaped plunger switch that depresses when the door is closed and springs out when it opens. This is the switch to your light. If the door switch looks particularly dirty or worn down, it could be the cause of your light problem. If you toggle the door switch a few times and the light comes on, it might have been a loose wire inside. The door switch might need to be replaced altogether to solve your issue.

Check the Lightbulb
The problem may be the light bulb itself. It could have reached the end of its lifespan and has burned out. Check the bulb to see if there’s any dark areas or broken filament. If you shake the bulb and hear a rattling noise that means the filament inside is damaged. There are light bulbs made specifically for appliances, usually 25 or 40 watts, that can be purchased at the hardware store. Unplug your refrigerator and change the bulb.

Check the Power
Start by ensuring the power cord to the refrigerator is fully plugged into its outlet. It’s possible you might have accidentally knocked the plug out of alignment. An overload or short-circuit could cause the circuit breaker controlling the refrigerator to trip, shutting off the light. Although this isn’t as common, a power cord on the refrigerator can become frayed or damaged, disrupting the flow of electricity.

Check the Wiring
After removing the light cover, you should carefully check any wire within your reach. Shaking the refrigerator could cause loose wires to pull free from the electrical contact that connects to the bulb. Wiggle the wiring and see what happens. If the bulb flickers, do your best to move the wires towards the back of the light socket. This can help regain a connection.
