Why Your Dishwasher Smells Bad—and How to Clean It

Hey everyone, welcome back to Appliance Helpers! If your dishwasher smells like something died in there—or like a swamp—you’re not alone. Today, I’ll explain why dishwashers sometimes smell bad, and more importantly, how you can clean them so they’re fresh again.
First, let’s talk about why your dishwasher stinks. There are a few common culprits.
Food particles – Leftover bits of food get stuck in the filter and start to rot.
Grease buildup – Over time, grease coats the walls and hoses.
Standing water – If the drain is clogged, stagnant water breeds bacteria.
Mold and mildew – Warm, moist environments are perfect for mold growth.
Okay, so now let’s go step-by-step on how to clean and deodorize your dishwasher.
Step 1: Clean the filter
Most modern dishwashers have a filter at the bottom. Pull it out and wash it with warm, soapy water. This alone can eliminate a ton of smells.
Step 2: Check the drain
Make sure there’s no food or gunk clogging the drain. A quick clean here helps water flow properly.
Step 3: Run a vinegar cycle
Fill a dishwasher-safe cup with white vinegar and place it on the top rack. Run a hot cycle. Vinegar kills bacteria and dissolves grease.
Step 4: Baking soda rinse
Next, sprinkle a cup of baking soda inside the dishwasher and run a short hot cycle. This freshens and deodorizes.
Step 5: Wipe the seals and door
Don’t forget the door seals. Mold loves to hide there. Use a cloth with vinegar to wipe it clean.
And that’s it! Follow these steps once a month and your dishwasher will stay fresh and clean.
