How do I remove scratches from the glass surface of my cooktop?
Posted On: September 3, 2023

Removing scratches from the glass surface of a cooktop can be challenging, but it is possible to improve their appearance. Here's a step-by-step guide on how to remove minor scratches from a glass cooktop:

Materials You'll Need:

Cooktop Cleaner: Choose a cooktop cleaner specifically designed for glass surfaces.

Soft Cloth or Sponge: Use a soft, non-abrasive cloth or sponge to avoid further scratching.

Baking Soda (Optional): Baking soda can help with mild abrasion.

Razor Blade Scraper (Optional): Only use this if the scratches are stubborn and have not responded to other methods.

Instructions:

Clean the Cooktop: Start by ensuring the glass cooktop is clean and free from debris. Use a soft cloth or sponge and a glass cooktop cleaner to clean the entire surface.

Check the Severity of Scratches: Assess the scratches on the glass surface. If they are shallow and not too severe, they may be repairable.

Apply Cooktop Cleaner: Apply a small amount of the cooktop cleaner directly onto the scratched area. Use a soft cloth or sponge to work the cleaner into the scratched area in a circular motion.

Use Baking Soda (Optional): If the scratches are still visible after using the cooktop cleaner, you can make a paste by mixing baking soda with a little water. Apply the paste to the scratches and gently rub in a circular motion. Baking soda is mildly abrasive and can help remove shallow scratches.

Rinse and Wipe Clean: After using the cleaner or baking soda, rinse the cooktop with water to remove any residue. Then, wipe it dry with a clean, dry cloth.

Inspect the Surface: Check the glass cooktop to see if the scratches have been significantly reduced or removed. If they are still visible, you may need to repeat the process.

Razor Blade Scraper (Caution - Optional): For stubborn scratches that won't come out with the above methods, you can consider using a razor blade scraper. However, this method requires caution to avoid damaging the glass further. Hold the blade at a shallow angle and gently scrape the surface of the glass, moving the blade in the direction of the scratches. Do not press too hard or use excessive force. Always keep the glass lubricated with a cleaning solution to reduce friction.

Final Clean and Polish: Once the scratches are minimized or removed, clean the cooktop one final time with the glass cooktop cleaner to give it a polished appearance.

Remember that deep or severe scratches may not be entirely removable, and attempting to remove them could lead to further damage. If the scratches are extensive or the cooktop is still under warranty, it's advisable to contact the manufacturer or a professional appliance repair service for assistance or potential replacement.
