How quiet should a dishwasher be
Posted On: February 14, 2022

The dishwasher is the one appliance you cannot do without once you've had one. Not only does it make it easier to clean up after a meal, but you are also saving more water and energy than if you wash dishes by hand, especially if the appliance is energy efficient.

Like the washing machine, a dishwasher does make noise when cleaning the dishes. But, just how loud or quiet should the dishwasher be?

Measuring the decibel level (the sound level) depends on the manufacturer and their running cycle. Some may take the reading when the dishwasher is in the middle, while others will use the end of a delicate cycle. What this all means is that some dishwashers are louder than others.

Even though the sound level varies with each model, most dishwashers have a decibel level of 46-60dB. Dishwashers under 46dB are considered very quiet. But they can be expensive.

So, what do these levels mean, and how can we compare them to everyday noises?

Dishwashers with a 39-45dB rating are very quiet, like the sound of falling rain or the noise level of a library. So, if you or your kids spend a lot of time in the kitchen and don't mind paying the extra money, these are the dishwashers to buy.

45-49dB dishwashers are the most common dishwasher and sound like a quiet neighborhood during the day, but you can still hear cars.

Another standard level of noise for a dishwasher is 50-59dB. With these dishwashers, you'll be able to notice the difference between each cycle.

Any dishwasher with a dB level of 60 and over is more common in older dishwashers.

Replacing dishwashers can be pretty expensive, and if there's nothing wrong with your current dishwasher, other than noise, you can do a few things to cut down the noise. Such as adding rugs, cushions to your dining chairs, and other sound-absorbing items.

If you notice that your dishwasher is louder than usual, it could indicate an issue that needs fixing.
