Very scary experience with this new Speed Queen Dryer. Putting it out there for others.

Two months after we bought this, I put towels in the dryer, and put it on “more dry.” It was still running 13 HOURS LATER. The towels were scorching hot and there was more lint than I have ever seen. It would have kept running until my house burned down.

We had a repairman come out under the warranty. He assessed the issue, it happened again as he was operating the unit, and he replaced the timer/knob to get it to work again. One month later the same issue occurred. Luckily we caught it 3 hours into the cycle this time.

A new repairman came out today to diagnose the issue. Here's the thing:.

This is a bidirectional knob. The text above the knob says to turn clockwise but for me it was natural to give a small counterclockwise turn to run the next auto-dry cycle rather than spinning the knob fully around. The knob puts up no resistance and the machine runs normally if you turn the knob counterclockwise.

BUT HERE'S THE THING. The second repairman tells me that after repairing the same issue multiple times on another person's dryer they realized that turning the knob counterclockwise can break the timer in the knob, causing the dryer to run forever as it did in our case. After he shared this information with us he did locate a line in the manual telling you to turn the knob clockwise and mentioning this as a possible issue if you turn it the other way.

So yes, this is a known issue. Yes, it is addressed in the manual. Yes, the text on the knob reads “turn clockwise.”.

But this is a functioning bidirectional knob. My instinct was to turn the knob 30 degrees back to start the next cycle rather than going all the way around. “Turn clockwise” in small print that is drowned out by all the other options before you is NOT GOOD ENOUGH, Speed Queen. Even your warranty technicians are not fully aware of this issue! The first repairman we saw used the knob the same way I did and the second guy only figured it out after encountering it multiple times.

Before buying this dryer, ask yourself—Do all of your house guests read your appliance manuals before doing a little laundry? Does everyone in your house understand the nuances of Speed Queen dryers better than their own repairmen? Do you trust everyone who does the laundry in your house to remember that the tiny “turn clockwise” text is a command, not a suggestion, even though the knob turns both ways and machine ran fine the last time they did a load? Are you willing to bet your house on it? .

If you or anyone else in your house puts things in the dryer and leaves it unattended while elsewhere in the house or on an errand I would absolutely not buy this machine.

Question from user Mombrane at Appliances at reddit.com.

Answer:

I think you're making a huge deal out of you not following directions explicitly stated on the machine and in the manual.
