What size pool heater do I need

What size pool heater do I need
Posted On: November 8, 2021

If you have owned a pool for an extended period, you probably know the ins and outs of essential pool maintenance and the types of equipment you need to keep enjoying the pool throughout the summer season or year-round, depending on where you live. An example of a piece of equipment would be a heater.

But for those new pool owners, you probably wonder what size of pool heater I need to keep my pool at a comfortable temperature? Before we begin, there are three types of pool heaters, gas, electric and solar.

All three types of heaters will keep your pool at a comfortable level. Just some cost more than others. But in the end, they all do the same thing: heat your pool so that when you take your next dip, you won't turn into an ice cube.

Choosing the right size of pool heater depends on the size of your pool. The bigger the pool, the higher the BTUs you will need. For example, 16 feet by 32 feet pool will need a heater size of 250,000 BTUs. And 20 feet by 40 feet pool will need a 400,000 BTU heater.

It's crucial to choose a heater that is the right size for your pool. You do not want one that's too small for your pool as it will not keep the right temperature. On the opposite end, you do not want one that's too large as it will overheat the water and may cause damage to your pool and may cause injuries.

You can go a little above the maximum BTU recommendation for the size of your pool, but just don't go too far above it. Because as mentioned, a very high BTU heater for a smaller pool can cause significant damage.

A pool heater isn't the only thing that can keep your pool at a comfortable swim level. You also want to purchase a pool cover, so the heat is trapped. Pool covers also keep debris out of the pool.

How long you want to run your heater is up to you. You can choose to keep it running all the time or turn it on when you are about to take a swim.

Remember, a clean pool is also just as important as keeping it warm.
