Gas Stove Burner Won’t Light? Here’s What It Might Be
Posted On: August 25, 2025

Hey everyone, welcome back to Appliance Helpers. Today we’re looking at one of the most common kitchen problems—a stove burner that won’t light. Whether you’ve got a gas stove or an electric cooktop, there are a few simple things that could be causing it. Let’s go step by step and figure out what might be wrong.

Step 1: Check for Power or Gas Supply
The first thing to check is the power and the gas supply. For electric ignition stoves, make sure the unit is plugged in and the circuit breaker hasn’t tripped. For gas stoves, make sure the gas valve is turned on.

If there’s no power or gas, the burner won’t light no matter what you try.

Step 2: Listen for the Clicking Sound
When you turn the knob on a gas stove, you should hear a clicking sound. That’s the igniter sparking to light the flame. If you don’t hear it, the igniter might not be getting power.

This could mean a loose connection or a faulty igniter. If that’s the case, you’ll likely need a replacement part.

Step 3: Clean the Burner Head
One of the most common causes of a burner not lighting is food debris, grease, or spills blocking the gas flow. If the gas can’t reach the igniter, it won’t light.

Remove the burner cap and burner head, and give them a good cleaning with warm, soapy water. Dry them completely before putting them back.

Step 4: Check the Igniter for Dirt or Damage
Another issue could be the igniter itself. If it’s dirty, cracked, or misaligned, it won’t spark properly.

Wipe the igniter gently with a dry toothbrush or cloth. If it looks damaged or worn, it will need to be replaced.

Step 5: Make Sure the Burner Cap Is Aligned
Sometimes, the burner cap just isn’t sitting correctly. If it’s out of place, the gas won’t flow evenly, and the burner won’t light.

Make sure the cap is aligned and flat before trying again.

Step 6: Check for Gas Flow Issues
If one burner won’t light but the others work fine, it’s usually a localized issue with that burner. But if none of the burners are lighting, you may have a bigger problem with the gas supply or regulator.

At that point, you’ll want to call a professional to check it out safely.

Closing Recap
So, to recap—if your stove burner won’t light, check the power and gas supply, make sure the igniter is sparking, clean the burner parts, align the cap, and inspect the igniter. Most of the time, one of these simple steps will solve the problem.
