Brown residue on felt gasket

Brown residue on felt gasket
Posted On: June 11, 2023

On my (used) Fridgidaire dryer, the felt gasket on the drum has a brown oily residue on the side that comes in contact with the dryer body while the drum spins, particularly in the front.

I wiped it with isopropyl alcohol, but in doing so it seems like I pushed the gasket back further into the gap.

It still runs fine.

What is the brown residue most likely from? Fabric softener use by the previous owner?

Question from user fraud1900 at Appliances at reddit.

The brown oily residue on the felt gasket of your Frigidaire dryer is most likely a buildup of fabric softener or dryer sheets. When these products are used in the dryer, they can leave behind a waxy or oily residue that accumulates on the drum and other surfaces. Over time, this residue can transfer onto the felt gasket, especially on the side that comes into contact with the dryer body.

By wiping the gasket with isopropyl alcohol, you likely dissolved and spread some of the residue, pushing the gasket further into the gap in the process. While it may not cause immediate problems, it's best to ensure the gasket is properly aligned and seated against the drum to maintain optimal performance and prevent potential issues in the long run.

To address the residue and prevent further buildup, you can try the following steps:

  1. Unplug the dryer from the power source to ensure your safety.
  2. Open the dryer door and locate the felt gasket around the drum.
  3. Gently pull the gasket back into its original position if it has been pushed too far.
  4. Clean the gasket and the drum thoroughly. You can use warm soapy water or a mild detergent to remove the residue. Make sure to rinse and dry both surfaces completely before reassembling.
  5. If the residue persists, you can try using a specialized dryer drum cleaner or a mixture of equal parts vinegar and water to break down the buildup. Apply the cleaner or mixture to a cloth or sponge and wipe the affected areas.
  6. Regularly clean the drum and gasket after each use to prevent future buildup. Avoid using excessive amounts of fabric softener or dryer sheets.

By following these steps, you should be able to remove the brown oily residue and ensure that your dryer continues to operate effectively.
