Dishwasher Not Draining? Quick Fixes to Try
Posted On: September 23, 2025

Hey everyone, welcome back to Appliance Helpers! If you just opened your dishwasher and found a pool of dirty water at the bottom—don’t panic. Today I’ll walk you through some quick fixes to try if your dishwasher isn’t draining.

Before you call a repair tech, there are a few simple things you can check yourself. Let’s go step by step.

Step 1: Check for a clogged filter
Food particles often clog the filter. Take it out, rinse it under warm water, and scrub away grease and debris. This alone can solve the problem.

Step 2: Inspect the drain hose
Make sure the drain hose isn’t kinked or clogged. A quick check and cleaning can restore normal drainage.

Step 3: Clean the air gap (if you have one)
If your kitchen sink has an air gap, twist off the cap and clear out any food buildup inside. A clogged air gap can block water flow.

Step 4: Run the garbage disposal
Since dishwashers and disposals share the same drain line, a clog in the disposal can cause backup. Run it to clear out anything stuck inside.

Step 5: Try a vinegar and hot water flush
Pour a cup of white vinegar into the bottom, then run a short hot cycle. This helps dissolve grease and loosen minor blockages.

And there you go—five quick fixes you can try before calling in the pros. In many cases, one of these steps will get your dishwasher draining properly again.
