Help, My Oven is the Doorway to Hell

Help, My Oven is the Doorway to Hell
Do you think your oven's a doorway to Hell because of all that smoke? Whether it's a light haze or dark plumes, this should never be ignored. Read on to learn all about the common causes of a smoking oven and how to clear it out for good.
Although it may not seem obvious, smoke can negatively affect the flavour and quality of your food. Even worse, it can irritate nearby pets or people who have respiratory conditions. If the situation is neglected, it can spark a nasty oven failure or fire. This can occur to units new and old, electric and gas, and appliances with or without food inside. The right fix will most likely depend on your type of appliance and circumstances.
Remove Food Remains
Smoke is usually the result of the burning of food remains left in the oven. If you regularly broil high-fat foods like steaks or bake foods like pizzas, grease can potentially splatter on the roof and sidewalls of the oven and food debris can fall on the floor. If you don't clean these remains while they are still wet, they can harden, leaving your oven susceptible to burning, emitting smoke.
Run Short Self-Clean Cycles
When smoke comes from your oven only during self-clean cycles, it's usually caused by food being incinerated under the excessive heat of the cycle. When this happens, turn off the oven and let it cool completely, then wipe away food residue from the interior with a water-dampened rag and start the cycle all over again. Do it at the shortest possible duration to prevent an excessive heat buildup.
Wipe Up Cleaner Residue
If your appliance has been recently cleaned with a cleaning solvent but you see that the oven is smoking, it's probably due to cleaner residue that's burning off and emitting smoke. Since chemical-laden fumes can accompany that smoke, you must solve the problem as soon as possible. Turn off the oven and let it cool completely, then use a water-dampened rag to wipe up any cleaner residue or spills on the oven floor, roof, and sidewalls.
Properly Maintain Your Oven
There are several easy ways to keep oven smoke at bay:
Safeguard the interior of your appliance from spills by placing food in baking or broiling pans before you start cooking. Try to avoid placing foods directly on the oven racks.
If your oven has multiple tiers, lay a fireproof, non-stick mat on the bottom rack to catch debris from foods placed on the upper rack.
Be sure to clean the interior and racks of your oven monthly, and use the self-clean feature no more than five times each year.
