How do I remove foul odors from my dishwasher?
Posted On: July 31, 2023

To remove foul odors from your dishwasher, follow these steps:

Clean the Filter: Start by removing the dishwasher's filter (located at the bottom of the dishwasher) and cleaning it thoroughly. A clogged or dirty filter can contribute to unpleasant odors.

Inspect and Clean the Drain: Check the dishwasher's drain for any debris or food particles that may be causing the odor. Use a small brush or toothbrush to clean the drain and remove any buildup.

Check the Spray Arms: Ensure that the spray arms (the rotating arms that spray water during the wash cycle) are not clogged. Clean them if necessary to improve water circulation.

Clean the Interior: Wipe down the interior of the dishwasher, including the walls and door, with a mixture of warm water and mild dish soap. Pay special attention to the corners and crevices where food particles can accumulate.

Use Vinegar: Place a cup of white vinegar on the top rack of the dishwasher (empty) and run a hot water cycle. Vinegar helps to break down grease and remove odors.

Baking Soda Solution: Sprinkle baking soda on the bottom of the dishwasher and run a short hot water cycle. Baking soda is effective at neutralizing odors.

Check the Drain Hose: Ensure that the drain hose is properly connected and not clogged. A clogged or kinked hose can cause water to sit in the dishwasher, leading to odors.

Run Regular Cleaning Cycles: Periodically run a dishwasher cleaning cycle using a commercial dishwasher cleaner. This helps to remove built-up residue and keep the dishwasher smelling fresh.

Scrape Plates Before Loading: Remove excess food from dishes and utensils before placing them in the dishwasher. This prevents food particles from accumulating and causing odors.

Leave the Door Open: After each use, leave the dishwasher door slightly ajar to allow air to circulate and prevent moisture buildup, which can lead to unpleasant odors.

Use Fresh Rinse Aid: Ensure that your dishwasher has a full rinse aid dispenser and use a fresh rinse aid to help with drying and odor prevention.

By following these steps, you can effectively remove foul odors from your dishwasher and keep it smelling fresh and clean. Regular maintenance and cleaning will also improve the dishwasher's performance and extend its lifespan.
