How to increase the efficiency and lifespan of your AC
Posted On: December 6, 2021

If you have an air conditioner, you are probably are wondering how you can make it more energy-efficient and expand the lifespan. Depending on where you live, you probably use your a/c more or less often than others.

To help increase the lifespan of your a/c unit, consider the following.

  1. Allow for rest periods: If you are away from home for an extended amount of time, consider turning your a/c off or the thermostat up a few degrees so the unit stays on but doesn't cool.
  2. Maintenance: Just like your furnace, your a/c needs regular maintenance to continue to run smoothly. This includes cleaning the unit, performing tune-ups and checking for any leaks in the hose.
  3. Air circulation: Proper airflow is needed for your a/c unit to work efficiently. Clear away anything that could be blocking the vents.
  4. Clean your ducts:  Dirty ductwork is not only a health concern but can also affect the airflow of both the a/c and the furnace. About once a year, routine cleaning will ensure proper airflow and reduce the amount of dust throughout your home.
  5. Change the filter: You must change your filter at least every 90 days or less depending on the number of pets in your home and how often the unit is running. Clean filters mean proper airflow.
  6. Use a thermostat: Using a programmable thermostat, you can control the temperature and how long the a/c will run.
  7. Blinds: Closing your blinds can keep the sunlight out and keep your house cool.
  8. Weatherstripping: When you use weatherstripping, you keep the cool air from escaping your home.
  9. Use a fan: When it's not too hot, consider using a fan instead of the air conditioner to cool the rooms.
  10. Cover the unit in the winter: Covering your a/c in the winter months can help it last longer by preventing rusting from melting snow. It can also keep any dirt and debris away from the unit. If you are going to cover it up, make sure that there is sufficient airflow.

By following the steps above, you can not only expand the lifespan of your a/c unit but can also lower your energy bills and reliability. Maintenance and repairs are best left up to an HVAC specialist. A well-maintained air conditioner can last 10 to 15 years.
