Air Conditioner Troubleshooting

Thermostat
Batteries may be dead, or the thermostat may be switched off. Change the batteries and check that the thermostat is set to cool.

Circuit breaker
The breaker may have been switched off. Turn the switch to the “on” position.

Not blowing cold air?
The filter may be clogged or full of debris. If you haven’t changed your air filter in a while or you’ve been running your A/C more than normal, it’s probably due for a change.
The air conditioning unit outside your home may not be able to vent the hot air from your home properly. Check to make sure your unit has at least 2 feet of clear space. Remove vegetation and leaves from in, on and around your unit.
If the refrigerant is leaking, you won’t be getting cool air. Call an HVAC expert to fix the issue, since it requires trained expertise.
Old homes may have insulation gaps that let the cool air leak out. Windows are common culprits, consider replacing or using blackout curtains.

Dripping water?
The PVC pipe that leaves the A/C unit may be clogged. Use compressed air to clean it out and allow normal function.

Making odd sounds?
Squealing may indicate that there is an issue with the belt or blower motor. Adding lubricant to the oil port can help the parts run smoothly.

Fan blades
If the sound is more like a slapping noise, the problem may be with the blades of the fan. Something may be stuck in the blades. Turn off power to the unit to check if this is the cause and remove it.

Furnace Troubleshooting

Not heating?
Most likely, either the electrical system providing your furnace’s power has shorted or the power switch has blown. Try resetting your furnace’s circuit breaker. If it has blown, you will need to replace it.
The furnace’s igniter might either be cracked or faulty. Check the part for cracks, if it is then replace the igniter. If it isn’t cracked, use a multimeter to test for continuity.

Cycling irregularly?
Your thermostat might be adjusting incorrectly, causing the furnace to cycle on and off too often. If your thermostat has an adjustable calibration scale, adjust the heat anticipator. If this does not stabilize the unit, you may have to replace the thermostat.

Not blowing hot air?
Your blower motor may have completely burnt out. If this doesn’t seem to be the case, then the connecting belt may have simply broken. Test to see if power is reaching the motor. If it does, but isn’t running, the motor has likely failed. If the motor runs but air doesn’t move, the connecting belt has probably broken. You’ll have to replace the belt.

Blowing too much air?
The control board regulates the amount of voltage that reaches each functioning part. If the relay that controls the blower motor has failed, it will continually send voltage to the motor. Replace the control board.
The contact that controls the blower motor on your thermostat may be stuck closed, causing the blower motor to run continuously. Use a multimeter to check for continuity. If it appears the thermostat is the issue, replace it.

Starting and then stopping shortly after?
Your furnace’s flame sensor monitors the burner, detecting whether a flame is present. If it is either defective or dirty, it will not be able to detect a flame. If dirty, clean the sensor using a fine abrasive pad. If faulty, replace the flame sensor.

The contractor and his associates were first rate. They did an excellent job and were very professional. They were there on time and completed the job just as they promised. They did not try to hard sell any products. They explained all the products thoroughly and allowed me to decide which furnace fit my needs. I would use them again and highly recommend them. The product I chose works great.

I just replaced a Luxaire after 16 years. Will admit I wasn't diligent about annual maintenance and didn't always change the filter on time, and even with that being the case, I did not have even one repair done to the furnace in the 16 years. Very satisfied!

After 21 years, we are replacing our Luxaire unit. It has been great. When we bought it, I had never heard of the brand, but the installer assured me that though not well known, it was a solid, dependable unit. We've had no problems with it. Only expense has been annual maintenance on it with our contractor. It's still running cool–albeit with lessened efficiency–but needs some work, so we've decided, considering its age, we should replace it. We've been very happy with our Luxaire. I've been told by many people, including a Carrier salesperson, that most units are pretty much the same; the most important thing is the competence of the installer.

This furnace is so much more efficient than my old unit. It saved me at least 40% in heating fuel in just the first year. It heats quickly and my house has never been more comfortable. I would definitely buy this unit and use the same contractor again. The price was fair and the return on investment is great! Can't think of any downside to this furnace.

I felt compelled to share a couple of things we learned this summer when we had our air conditioner replaced. For one, our Tempstar central AC unit lasted just over 5 years. The company that installed it didn't register it, and so when it croaked we didn't even get the advertised 10-year warranty. This is unacceptable, we sure can't afford a new one every 5 years. We had a friend in Hudsonville that had a Luxaire that was going on 16 years old, and they strongly recommended that brand. The dealer we called was extremely helpful in pointing out the potential downfall of the old system after he performed something called a Manual J, which is how HVAC equipment should be sized. The new unit looks 10 times better, is half as loud, and our contractor put in a system that qualified us for a boat load of tax credits and utility rebates. I'd advise anyone looking for a furnace or air conditioner to look at Luxaire, which I honestly had never heard of until this whole fiasco. Also note, Luxaire donates money to Make-A-Wish. If you know what that is, enough said. If you don't, you need to look it up. We researched the company, and it made swallowing another bill a touch easier.

I replaced a 17 year old system with the new 17 Seer Luxaire equipment. My old equipment was so loud indoors. This new furnace…unbelievably quiet! The outdoor equipment is just as quiet! I love the smooth and quiet sounds coming from them when they are in operating mode. Can't wait to see the savings on my utility bills!
