Miele Appliance Troubleshooting

Since being founded in 1899 Miele has followed its 'Forever Better' brand promise. This means: they will do all that we can to be "forever better" than their competitors and "forever better" than they already are.

Dishwasher Troubleshooting

Primary Miele Dishwasher Troubleshooting Tips
Miele dishwashers have a "Start/Stop" light that flashes after you turn it on. If it doesn't flash, verify that the dishwasher is plugged into an outlet and that you have selected a dishwasher program. Completely close the washer door and press "Start/Stop".
If the dishwasher still won't turn on, check the household circuit breaker or fuses. If the fuses are blown out, replace them. Reset the circuit breaker if tripped by turning the circuit breaker switch to the "on" position. If the dishwasher starts, but stops, check the fuses.
If your dishwasher won't start at all, open the housing and examine the door switch (four wires connected via a plastic component). Change out the switch if it's corroded or blown. Before opening the housing and examining wires, disconnect power to the dishwasher as a safety precaution.

Inlet/Drain Indicator: Not Filling
The "Intake/Drain" indicator light flashes when your Miele dishwasher has a problem with its water supply. Verify that the water is connected to your dishwasher and that the water inlet valve is completely in the "On" position. If the valve is leaking or defective, replace it. If your tub is not filling with water, clean the water filter and the water inlet hose if clogged.
Straighten the hose if kinked. Use a water pressure gauge to check the water pressure. If it's below 20 psi, contact your water supplier or wait for the pressure to return to normal.

Inlet and Drain Indicator: Not Draining
If your tub is not draining, clean the drain pump, filters, air gap and non-return valve. Examine the drainage hose and straighten it if kinked. Open the dishwasher housing; examine the pump and pump belt. If the impeller on the pump is broken, replace the whole pump. If the belt is worn or split, you must get a new one. If you smell an electrical burning smell or the motor doesn't move, replace it.
A garbage disposal that's connected to the dishwasher may cause a blockage from food that gets trapped in the drainage line. Run the garbage disposal as you run water in your kitchen sink to dislodge any blockage.
As a safety precaution, disconnect the power to your dishwasher before opening the housing or performing any repairs or replacement.

Additional Dishwasher Issues
Remove any old detergent from the dispenser if the dispenser is not closing properly. Only use dry, non-clumping detergent in the dishwasher.
If you hear a rattling noise, stop your Miele dishwasher and reposition some of the dishes. The dishes are hitting against each other, which can cause chipping.
A knocking noise inside the tub means the spray arm is blocked. Remove any items keeping the arm from moving freely. Use a rinse aid to help with drying and to reduce spots on glasses. Let the cycle completely finish before removing dishes.

Dryer Troubleshooting

The tumble dryer fails to start when switched on
No obvious cause
- Have you followed the switch-on procedure correctly?
- Is the plug correctly inserted in the socket and switched on?
- Is the door closed properly?
- Has the fuse or circuit breaker tripped?

Items made of synthetic fibres are charged with static electricity after drying.
Synthetic fibres tend to attract static charge
Static charge can be reduced by adding afabric conditioner to the final rinse in the washing machine or a fabric conditioner sheet to the load in the dryer.

Microwave Troubleshooting

A cooking program cannot be started
Cause 1:
The appliance door is not closed.
Remedy 1:
Close the door.
Cause 2:
The system lock is activated.
Remedy 2:
Deactivate the system lock in accordance with the operating instructions.
Cause 3:
The appliance is not plugged in.
Remedy 3:
Check that the appliance is plugged in and the fuse has not tripped.

Food cools down too quickly
Cause:
- Food is hot on the surface but not hot enough inside.
- Temperature equilibrium occurs during the standing time.
Remedy:
Food with a less uniform composition should be cooked at a lower power output over a longer period of time.

Food is not adequately defrosted, heated or cooked at the end of the selected time
Cause 1:
An appropriate power output was not selected for the selected cooking time.
Remedy 1:
The lower the power setting, the longer the cooking time required.
Cause 2:
A program was interrupted and not restarted.
Remedy 2:
Restart the program.

Abnormal noises during microwave operation
Cause 1:
Food is covered with aluminum foil.
Remedy 1:
Remove all aluminum wrapping.
Cause 2:
Sparking may result from the use of unsuitable utensils.
Remedy 2:
Only use utensils suitable for use in a microwave oven. Consult the operating instructions for further information.

Reminder signal does not sound
Cause:
If the reminder signal does not sound, it has been switched off; it can be reactivated in "Settings."
Remedy:
For further details, see the operating instructions.

Range Troubleshooting

Baked goods are not cooked properly after following the times given in the chart
Cause 1:
A different temperature than that given in the recipe was used.
Remedy 1:
Select the temperature required for the recipe.
Cause 2:
The ingredient quantities are different from those given in the recipe.
Remedy 2:
Double-check your recipe. The addition of more liquid or more eggs will make a wetter mixture which will take longer to cook.

A noise is heard after the cooking program is complete
Cause:
The cooling fan will continue to run for some time after the oven has been turned off to prevent humidity from building up in the oven, on the control panel or in the surrounding cabinetry.
Remedy:
This is not a fault. There are two settings for the cooling fan:
Temperature-controlled:
The cooling fan turns off when the temperature in the oven drops below 160°F (70°C).
Time-controlled:
The cooling fan will turn off after approx. 25 minutes. Condensation can damage the cabinetry and the countertop. This could lead to corrosion of the appliance. When keeping food warm in the oven, increases to the "Time-Controlled" setting can lead to condensation on the control panel, as well as moisture on the countertop and on the cabinetry.
Do not adjust the "Time-Controlled" setting and try not to leave food in the warm oven.

Rack and other accessories make a noise when being pushed into or pulled out of the oven
Cause:
The heat-resistant surface of the shelf runners creates friction when accessories are taken in and out of the oven.
Remedy:
To reduce friction, lubricate the runners with a few drops of cooking oil applied to a paper towel.
Repeat this process after each self-clean program.

Unpleasant odor is coming from the range
Cause 1:
New ovens can give off an unpleasant odor on the first use; this is normal.
Remedy 1:
1. Heat up the oven for at least 1 hour with nothing inside.
2. Ensure that the kitchen is well ventilated while the appliance is being heated up for the first time.
3. Close doors to other rooms to prevent the smell from spreading throughout the house.
4. Remove any protective wrapping and sticky labels from the oven.
5. Before heating the oven up, wipe the interior with a damp cloth to remove any dust or bits of packaging that may have accumulated in the oven cavity during storage and unpacking.
6. Insert the FlexiClips with wire rack (available to order) to the shelf runners and insert all trays and the rack.
7. Turn on the oven.
8. Proceed as described in Remedy 2.
Cause 2:
The steam injection system has residual water in it from factory testing.
Remedy 2:
Rinse the steam injection system. To do so, proceed as follows:
1. Turn on the oven. The main menu will appear.
2. Select "Operating Modes."
3. Select "Moisture Plus." The default temperature is displayed (350°F/160°C). The oven heating, lighting and cooling fan will turn on.
4. Set the highest possible temperature (475°F/250°C).
5. Confirm with "OK."
6. Select "Automatic burst of steam."
After a short time, a burst of steam is injected automatically.

Oven does not heat up but appears to be operational
The oven can be operated but will not heat up.
Cause:
The demonstration mode is activated. This mode enables the oven to be demonstrated in showrooms without heating up. It should not be set for residential use.
Remedy:
To deactivate the demonstration mode, proceed as follows:
1. Select the "Settings" menu.
2. Swipe across the screen until the "Showroom Program" option appears, then touch it to select.
3. Select "Demo Mode." The currently selected setting will have a colored frame around it.
4. Press and hold the "Off" option for at least 4 seconds to deactivate the demo mode. The oven can now be used normally.

Oven lighting does not turn on
Cause:
The halogen bulb needs to be replaced.
Remedy:
Replace the bulb.
NOTE 1:
Danger of burns! Ensure that the heating elements are turned off and that the oven has had time to cool.
NOTE 2:
The lighting cover may be damaged if it falls. When removing the cover. hold it firmly so that it does not fall. Place a towel on the oven floor to avoid damage to the cover.
NOTE 3:
Do not touch the new halogen bulb with your fingers; always follow the manufacturer’s instructions.
To replace the bulb, proceed as follows:
1. Disconnect the appliance from the power supply.
2. Loosen the bulb cover with the tool supplied at the back of the frame.
3. Remove the halogen bulb.
4. Replace the defective bulb with a new halogen bulb (Sylvania 66740 120V 40W, G9, FS1).
5. Press the bulb cover back into place.
6. Reconnect the appliance to the power supply.

Refrigerator Troubleshooting

Refrigerator does not cool well
Cause:
Air circulation inside refrigerator is impeded.
Remedy:
Ensure unimpeded air circulation along the rear panel. Overloading can also affect the cooling function.

Too few or misshapen ice cubes produced
Cause 1:
The water pressure is not sufficient.
Remedy 1:
The water pressure must be between 1.5 and 6.0 bar (22 and 87 psi). Increase the icemaker's water intake time in accordance with the operating instructions.
Cause 2:
The temperature in the freezer compartment is too low.
Remedy 2:
Set the temperature in accordance with the operating instructions.
Cause 3:
The water filter is clogged.
Remedy 3:
Change the water filter.

Food has frozen together
Cause:
---
Remedy:
Use a blunt instrument, e.g., a spoon handle, to carefully pry food items apart.

Alarm sounds and the freezer section temperature display flashes
Explanation: The freezer zone is warmer than the temperature selected.
Cause 1:
The freezer compartment door has been opened too frequently. This has caused the temperature inside the freezer compartment to rise.
Remedy 1:
As soon as the freezer compartment door remains closed for a longer period of time, the temperature will return to the temperature selected. No remedy necessary.
Cause 2:
A large amount of fresh food has been placed in the freezer and has caused the temperature to rise.
Remedy 2:
After a little while, the temperature will return to the temperature selected. No remedy necessary.
Cause 3:
A power failure occurred.
Remedy 3:
Once power has been restored to the appliance, the temperature will reach the temperature selected again. No remedy necessary.

Appliance makes unusual noises
Humming:
A brief humming noise is caused by the compressor and starts when it is activated.
Remedy:
This is a normal occurrence. No remedy necessary.
Bubbling:
Bubbling, gurgling or buzzing is caused by the refrigerant in the pipes.

Remedy 3:
Move bottles or containers slightly apart.
Cause 4:
The cable holder for transportation is still attached to the rear panel of the appliance.
Remedy 4:
Remove the cable holder.

Appliance is inoperative
Cause:
A technical defect.
Remedy:
1. If possible, unplug the electrical plug or switch off the appliance at the fuse box and leave the appliance disconnected for 1 minute.
2. Switch the appliance back on.
3. If the appliance is still inoperative, contact Miele Customer Service.

Appliance does not switch off
Cause:
The safety lock has been activated.
Remedy:
Deactivate the safety lock as outlined in the operating instructions.

The appliance is not plugged in.
Remedy 1:
Check that the appliance is plugged in and that the fuse has not tripped.
Cause 2:
The door is not closed.
Remedy 2:
Push the door firmly shut.
Cause 3:
The on/off switch has not been switched on.
Remedy 3:
Press the on/off switch.

Brown stains have developed during washing
Cause:
Brown stains appearing on laundry after washing are generally the result of pollen, juice or sap. These stains tend to turn brown over the course of time. This is the result of exposure to oxygen and insufficient laundry treatment.
Remedy 1:
Stains on delicate summer clothing:
Treat stains before washing using a stain remover. Allow the stain remover to work for approx. 10 minutes. Follow care instructions and wash garments by hand or in a washing machine. Use a detergent for delicates and a stain remover.
Remedy 2:
Stains on white or colored clothing:
Please use additional stain remover in wash cycles and select the highest temperature allowed by wash-care labels.

Long story short, the unit we got turned out to be a lemon. Through AJ Madison's help, Miele's sales organization intervened and cut through the process by just sending us a brand new unit and having Miele's white-glove service people install it, no charge. Now that's what I call service. Kudos to both Miele and John Pereira at AJ Madison. The second unit has been working fine. My suspicion is that Miele hasn't been in the freestanding range business for very long and that it's taken them a couple of years to work out quality control kinks with units in the field, but they've gotten there. The quality control has caught up to the design and functionality, and this is a great range.

This entry-level dishwasher from Miele is a real gem. It is so quiet that the only way to make out it's running is by taking a look at the display panel. Cleaning quality is superior, and there are multiple settings to choose from. The clean touch stainess steel is really what it claims to be, i.e., it does not retain fingerprints, and wiping it with a moist cloth leaves it squeaky clean. The biggest selling point of Miele appears to be their reliability. Even the dealer recommended not spending additional money to buy extended protection plan. His point was that unless there is a manufacturing defect (which would be covered by the 1 year warranty), these machines rarely break down within the coverage period of the extended warranty. Note that this is a German product, and hence not as big inside as its American cousins. I do recommend buying the model with the cutlery tray. Not only the cutlery is cleaned very well (it has a spraying arm right below the cutlery tray), it also frees up additional space in the lower rack by not having to accomodate the cutlery basket. Totally worth the additional $100. If you are ok with having the control panel on the front (which I actually like better than the controls being on the top of the door), you can't really go wrong with this dishwasher.

Like the previous reviewer, I was doing a complete re-do of my kitchen and went looking for an appliance that could combine microwave function with true oven cooking. When I told the appliance salesman what I was looking for, he headed straight for the Miele section and said "This is what you want". And BOY, was it ever. It was love t 1st sight. I've had it for a little over 2 years and it performs like a dream. I use it everyday and so do my kids. It does everything but clean the kitchen. It microwaves, broils, convection cooks, roasts, combo of any two AND it has some preset Masterchef functions like it's big sister. Great, great appliance

Been using the Combi Steam oven and the 30 inch convection oven with steam, both with M Touch for 4 months now. Yes they work perfect as expected but the ovens make most of our foods taste better. Really is an amazing thing. I almost always use M Touch which helps me make my cooking adventures successful. The Combi Steam replaces our microwave which is not permitted in her new completely redone home. It does take about three minutes Longer to heat up food instead of seconds in a micro. But.....the texture of the food is unchanged. That alone makes the steamer worth the cash. When I am heating up pot pie, pasta or pizza, because you control the percent steam in the oven, the food never ever dries out, usually tastes like it first came out of the oven the day before. Cooks lobsters as good as you will find anywhere. Now as far as reliability goes, way too early but I am protected for five years on these two (6780 and 6700) and the Miele dishwasher and six burner cook top. They all work better than any appliance I ever owned. And the dishwasher solves all my issues with dish washing.......very Pleased

I do really love this dryer. We bought the Miele : W3033 24 Front Load Washer as well. The fact you can put it anywhere in the house is remarkable. We did hook it up to the washer drain, because the water reservoir fills up quickly. After that no problems. We have been using it for almost a year now and we really love it. It is not a BIG dryer. If you plan on doing a weeks worth of laundry at once you will not love this unit. I like to do mine a little each day to keep it manageable and this is perfect. It is right in our bathroom, so we take all the clothes from the day (or two) and put them right in that washer. It would be awesome for apartment dwellers or if you don't have a lot of room. The price tag is heavy but I feel like in this case you get what you pay for. I would buy them again for sure.

I recently moved to a new house where venting the dryer is not possible. I explored a number of options including using something called a lint trap, but decided on a condensing dryer. Once this decision was made, the next decision was which dryer to purchase. I looked at the reviews of the popular condensing dryers on the market, and found that the Miele was the only one which received consistently great reviews. I purchased the Miele washer and dryer with the stacking option. The cost for both units together with the installation fees came to a little more than $4,400. I washed and dried six loads the first day I received the units. The washer is super quiet and smooth. The same is true with the dryer. The spin cycle on the washer is fantastic. The clothes came out of the washer so dry that I didn't think there was much work left for the dryer. It took more than an hour for the dryer to finish processing one load of wash. The sensor inside the dryer did a great job of making sure the wash was dry. The room where the washer/dryer is located remained cool, there was little or no lint, and the reservoir for the excess water was dry. The cost of the washer and dryer is very high, but both units are fantastic.

I recently spent many, many hours over several weeks looking for a new dishwasher to replace our 50+-year-old Kitchenaid. After research online and visits to stores, I would settle on one model only to change my mind after reading more user reviews online. I chose and unchose 3 or 4 dishwashers this way. Of course, even good products have a small percent of negative user reviews online, and this wasn't why I decided against the various dishwashers. At the beginning of my search, I was focused on the question of which features I wanted (`integrated' controls or front facing, hard food disposer, etc.), but eventually I realized that, given today's generally shoddy production standards, the key issue for me was: how well built is the machine, how long will it last, how many repairs will it need? From everything I read, it became clear that many dishwashers on the market that have wonderful features, that are wonderfully quiet and energy efficient, and that perform well on tests by Consumer Reports, are in fact made with cheap parts that do not last (often sourced from around the world for the lowest possible cost). The dishwasher can seem great at first, but after a few years the parts wear out, the dishwasher is not as quiet as it used to be, and it starts to require costly repairs. KitchenAid dishwashers, for example, used to be well made--several decades ago--but no longer. The same seems to be true of Bosch. I did not want to spend $1000 on a dishwasher only to have it start breaking down in a few years. At this point in my search I took another look at Miele. I had originally dismissed Miele as too expensive, but I discovered that this company had recently released a new low-end model ($999 for stainless steel), the Futura Classic G4205SS, to compete with other dishwashers at this level. The salesman at our store said that Miele tested the G4205 extensively for 3 or 4 years before releasing it to the public to ensure that it would not have any problems. He also said that Miele makes all of its own parts; it does not use parts made by third-party manufacturers. Similarly, for installation, they insist on Miele installers. The stainless steel on the G4205 has a glass coating to reduce fingerprints. The controls are on the front rather than `integrated.' This is what I prefer so that I can turn the machine on and see the status of the cycle without having to open the door. All other brands with front controls that I considered (<$1000) had a plastic panel for the controls (sometimes the panel is a silvery color to match the stainless steel below, but it is still plastic). In contrast, the G4205 control panel is stainless steel. Also, this dishwasher doesn't have the ubiquitous Hummer-style handle, which I never liked and which will probably start to look old-fashioned soon, once manufacturers begin the next cycle of making current styles look out of date. I've used this dishwasher for a couple of months now. It is really quiet, the dishes come out super clean, the controls are very simple and easy to use, it has a beautiful, minimalist look, and it's very energy and water efficient. Best of all, I expect that it will last. The only tiny quibble I have is that it is smaller inside than my old KitchenAid; I've learned to load dishes in a very compact way but still can't fit as much into this machine. Some potential buyers might care (I don't) that after a wash the floor of the dishwasher has a bit of water on it (probably an energy saving feature). However, if you open the door a crack the water evaporates before too long. In sum, a near-perfect dishwasher (for me) in a field filled with low-quality competitors.

I completely gutted my kitchen for a modern remodel. I decided I would not get a regular oven or a regular microwave. I wanted to combine the two. That's what this unit does. So far I have cooked a few fish dishes and a cornish hen. All turned out perfectly. Certainly better than when I did them in the old Jenn-Air that was junked. The cavity is smaller than a "normal" oven, but that's what helps it heat so well and efficiently. I have this unit in a cablinet on top of the counter top just above waist level. So far it has done very well and it can easily replace a normal oven.

Our 9yr old Miele washing machine developed a fault, would not power on, totally dead. I called Miele customer service and within 3 days their service engineer arrived and has replaced an electronic pcb board under the original 10yr warranty. Most machines would not even last this long, let alone have a service engineer repair it at no cost under warranty. I have to say how impressed I am with the impeccable quick Miele service received. I would absolutely recommend Miele

This renders the oven partially useless now as glass tray is the primary tray. Cost to replace is very expensive being the only downside of the wonderful product otherwise.

Condenser dryers take longer than vented to dry and spit out warm air. Do your homework before dropping $1500 on a dryer then complaining. I've had mine for a year and it's super. Dries clothes to the correct temp and doesn't burn anything. Only maintenance is running the coils under water twice a year. Plus it's great in the winter as it puts out warm air.

We bought our Miele to replace a six year old Whirlpool Gold that replaced an earlier one after a house fire. The first was correctly ranked by consumer reports, but the newer one never really cleaned dishes without prewashing them. Recently, it stopped cleaning altogether, so after months of frustration, repairman visits and repeat washes, we purchased a Miele Futura Classic locally. The poor reviews here make no sense to me after seeing ours in action for the last four months. It is super quiet and we only have to remove big chunks before loading. On the 2.5 hour cycle, everything is spotless, so we rarely run it longer. We were dubious about the upper silverware rack, but now think it is a marvel of engineering...for example: nutella caked spoons would never have even been allowed in our old machine but with the Miele I have yet to rewash silverware. Because of the speed, we've run 3 loads a day some weekends. The adjustability of the racks means that it fits a variety of items, including baking sheets that would have impeded the middle wash arm on the Whirlpool, but sheets and everything else come out clean with this machine. I loaded an enchilada pan last week with sauce and chunks of tortilla still stuck to the bottom to see how dirty I could leave things and it came out immaculate. I opted to write this review because I went on to see about pricing a Miele for my mom after thanksgiving and her own whirlpool gold left a house full of people hand washing. We love this machine.

We've had our Miele Futura Classic dishwasher for two years and have not had a single technical issue. Dishes have always been very clean. I'm impressed with the straining/filtering system which I've cleaned a few times just because I wanted to see if any junk got caught up in it; the self-cleaning mechanism seems to be working very well and there was really no need to worry about it. The dishwasher is quiet and I don't mind at all being in the kitchen while it is running; I see no need to get an even quieter dishwasher.

I think this is the most amazing kitchen appliance ever. I can cook 6 chicken breasts. Just push the according buttons and it comes out perfect. Rack of lamb-push pink and insert the probe and perfect. Takes the guess work out of cooking and perfect every time.

I am crazy happy with my Miele MC SO! I have been using it for 5 years and have not had any problems. Yes! It was ridiculously expensive! I paid $3,400. I had wanted the Dacor oven with no exposed cooking elements. I looked at it for two years, but did not like Dacor's microwave, which was nothing more than a Sharp Convection microwave. Then, one day, on another visit to our local Kustom Kitchen's the co-owner introduced me to the Miele MC SO. Oh my! I was struck! I could instantly see I would have two ovens (in my small kitchen) and be able to handle holidays with two ovens available for whatever I needed to cook, bake, roast, or keep warm. And it has not disappointed--ever! My only disappointment is in Miele. They have not provided the necessary DVD or decent manual to introduce users on how to best use and get maximum benefits from this oven. Their manual is way less than adequate. I am still hoping they will correct this. I have yet to learn when to use the Surround or Convection Bake. There are so many multiple cooking options. I also bought the 30" Miele oven. Beautiful! But more than that, they work great! My daughter recently bought the GE Monogram Speed oven and 30" oven ans 6 burner gas cook-range. Hers is great too, BUT, the Miele SO is better. I like that I can choose the exact oven temperatures and variables, rather than everything preset as on the GE Speed Oven. Would I buy it again? You bet! Warning: do not spill liquids in that glass door 1/16" opening along the top, or you're in trouble. I dumped the coffee cup twice. You can not remove that glass without a special tool. However, I finally was able to maneuver a moistened paper towel--over and over and was able to remove most of the stain to 96% satisfaction.
