Raypak Appliance Repair

For over 70 years, Raypak has been the world's leading manufacturer of copper finned boilers and heaters. From a modest beginning in 1947 in founder Al Whittel’s garage in Southern California, Raypak now supplies equipment all over the world from its manufacturing facility in Oxnard, California, and its licensee in England.

Pool Heaters Repair

For the home, kitchen and beyond, Raypak manufactures appliances that homeowners have come to trust. Even a trustworthy appliance requires occasional maintenance or repair, however. If you’re in need of Raypak appliance repair from experienced professionals, your local Appliance Helper can help.

Heater Won't Turn On or Does Not Stay On
Clean the filter and turn the thermostat up to try the heater again. A dirty filter can result in low pressure, and if the pressure leaving the filter is low, this will cause the pressure switch to turn the heater off. Check the shut-off valve on gas heaters to ensure that the valve is open and thus supplying fuel to the heater. If the unit is electric, make sure electrical connections are tight and that there is no corrosion at the terminals. If this doesn’t resolve the problem, check the transformer by attaching one voltmeter lead to a terminal on the transformer. Touch the other terminal with the other lead. A reading of between 20 and 28 volts means the transformer is fine. If it is lower than that, there may be a problem with the voltage supply or the transformer. Leave the lead from the voltmeter in contact with the ground or common terminal on the transformer, and check the circuitry connected to the heater as well. Begin by checking the safety fuse, then the high limit switch and then the pressure switch. If the meter shows voltage, these parts are fine. If it does not, replace them.

Low Flow or Inadequate Heating
If your heater shuts off before warming the water to the desired temperature, it may be the result of a dirty filter or an improperly set timer. A dirty filter can prevent the heater from firing. Clean the filter and set the temperature switch to the ON position at a high enough setting that the heater turns on. Reset the timer to allow the heater to run for a longer period. Check the systems valves as well to make sure that they are turned to go through the heater. If this does not resolve the problem, make sure you are using the right size of heater for your pool. If it is too small, it will not heat properly. The pool manufacturer’s product literature will recommend the right-size heater for your pool.

Noise
Sometimes your heater may make unusual noises such as bangs, whines or grinding. The first place to look is your systems hoses and filters. Debris can cause the heater to make knocking or whining noises during operation. Inspect the system for blockages and then back-flush the filter. A noisy heater can also indicate that it is operating after the pump shuts off, and this is related to a faulty pressure switch that needs to be replaced. Turn off the heater and contact a technician if you cannot find the source of the noise.

When to Call a Professional
A malfunctioning pool heater can be a serious safety hazard. If you are unsure about any situation or procedure, contact an expert or call your manufacturer for assistance. Do not attempt to repair electrical or gas issues by yourself. Malfunctioning gas valves and faulty wiring are jobs for professionals. Turn off power to the heater and call a technician if you have determined that the problem lies in these areas. In addition, if you cannot get your heater to shut off, this may indicate a dangerous problem that should be handled by a professional.

Having worked in the swimming pool business for over 13 years I can say this is the best heater you can buy. I've worked on many heaters including ones made by Teledyne Laars, Pentair, Sta-rite, Jandy, and Hayward. These are the reasons why I recommend this heater in my business: it has a simplistic, easy-to-work-on design with less wiring and moving parts. This is important because mice and insects destroy all of the heaters I mentioned at a faster rate. Raypak actually seals the computer board in a compartment that is almost impregnable. When something does go wrong the diagnosis is much simpler because there are fewer wires and parts. Frankly just about every other heater I work on is a complete nightmare in the wiring department. Over the years Raypak is the only company I've seen make meaningful changes to their product namely, protecting the delicate computer board and decreasing the size of the power supply.

As far as I'm concerned Raypak makes a really great pool heater. I just replaced a nearly 20yr old Raypak with a new Raypak 406k and absolutely love it! It is still one of the easiest to hook into a compool or aqualink control system, digital interface with precise target temp control (unlike a millivolt unit that is hard to dial in your temp with any accuracy). My father replaced his Raypak about a year before I did and his was about 17yrs old. His unit stays in direct sunlight while mine is always under shade, not sure if that is why I got extra years or not. I talked my brother in-law into replacing his 4yr old extremely troublesome and expensive Teledyne Laars with a Raypak, going on 8yrs now and not a single problem. I would give this product 10 stars if I could to offset the very unfair 1 star that the other guy left over a service dispute that was likely his fault to begine with, or perhaps a bad apple, either way Raypak is worth more than 1 star in my opinion.

Purchased a Hayward RAYPAK 266k BTU natural Gas Pool heater with digital ignition from INYOPOOLS about a month ago. Had it professionally installed. Nothing but trouble since. Very hard to light off the burners (the display’s favorite phrase is “Ignition Failure.” On those occasions when it does light it screams like a “BANSHEE.” Contacted INYO and they brushed me off to the manufacturer. Contacted Hayward and they said it was an install problem. Got the installer to talk to Hayward and then come out to look and fiddle with a “by-pass?” Still screams when lit but the noise goes away after a few minutes. The ignition failures persist. Extremely disappointed in this product and Hayward/Raypak. Would not recommend.
