What are the different types of furnaces?
Posted On: August 2, 2021

Your furnace is one of the most valuable utilities in your home. It helps keep you warm in the winter and cool in the summer, and the chances are that furnace runs on gas. But, did you know there are different types of furnaces, and each of these furnaces has its advantages and disadvantages.

The most common type of furnace is a gas furnace, and they work by using natural gas from a pipeline that runs into your home and your heating unit, igniting a burner. The ignited burner makes the gas hot, which then heats the temperature, sending warm air throughout your home via the ductwork system. A natural gas furnace is cheaper to run than the other types of furnaces.

Oil furnaces are used mainly in the Northwestern United States, where it gets cold. Oil furnaces turn oil into heat and are not as good at warming homes compared to gas furnaces. Oil furnaces can also be a little more expensive to own.

An electric furnace is the best option for homes without access to a natural gas line and works by using heating elements to provide warm air. These furnaces are cheaper to buy and usually are smaller than most furnaces which is beneficial to smaller homes. However, they can also be expensive to run and don't heat as well as a gas furnace.

If you are looking to spend a lot upfront and save in the long run, you may want to consider a modulating furnace. Modulating furnaces run on gas, and they work by regulating the amount of gas the unit uses to reach the intended temperature. They save money by not constantly shutting on and off but continues to run using lower energy levels.

Although heat pumps are not traditional furnaces, they use electricity to heat and cool the home and can be combined with a furnace to improve heating and cooling efficiency.
