What is a professional range
Posted On: January 10, 2022

If you're an avid chef or baker, you're probably interested in a professional range. A professional range, also known as a pro-style range, is a type of oven that looks like it belongs in a restaurant but is meant for a home kitchen. But before you go out and purchase a pro range, you must consider your kitchen's design, ventilation, ductwork, and, of course, budget.

There are two types of pro-range burners, open and sealed.

Open burners are the most popular type in commercial and restaurant settings because they can achieve high heat temperatures for cooking and searing. They can accomplish this because the open space allows for more oxygen which helps with creating more heat. Only a select few home professional range burners come with open burners.

Sealed burners are the most common type of burner in professional home ranges. Since the cooktop is solid, any spills will go under the burner, making for easy clean-up.

There are many reasons to purchase a professional range: more size options, high-quality parts, extra modes, and even rebates and promotions.

  • More size options: With a standard oven, sizes are about 30 inches. But with a pro range, sizes can range from 36 to 60 inches wide and even come with multiple ovens.
  • High-quality parts: Most pro-ranges are built with cast iron grates and burners, and some have one or more high-heat power burners.
  • Extra modes: Newer high-end professional ranges have many different settings. Some even have downloadable application modes that are equipped with wi-fi.
  • Rebates and promotions: Even though professional ranges are expensive, some stores may offer rebates or promotions when you purchase a new range. Some promotions can include a free appliance.

Of course, there are reasons not to get a pro range, such as spacing issues and budget. So if your kitchen doesn't have the space for a professional range, and you're not interested in redesigning your kitchen, then they may not be suitable for you.

When it comes to ventilation, professional ranges need a lot of ventilation because of the high heat. A proper vent hood will need to be installed to take the high heat. Your over the hood microwave vent will not handle the heat and will break down over time.
