What is make up air and why is it important
Posted On: February 21, 2022

Unless you have HVAC knowledge, the term make-up air is unfamiliar. What is make-up air, and is it important?

Make-up air is fresh air that has been drawn from the outside and recirculated inside. It's a good solution for replacing lost air while exhaust fans are on.

So, why is make-up air so important? Well, consider this.

If you cook a lot and your range hood is always on, it will pull a lot of air out of your kitchen, making breathing uncomfortable. And the more powerful your range hood is, the more you will need a make-up air unit unless your kitchen is large.

However, if you have a large kitchen and a large range hood with a large CFM rating, 1600 CFM, for example, you may want to consider a make-up air system.

In smaller kitchens, make-up air units are a good option, especially if the hood range is powerful. They are especially good if your kitchen is not adequately ventilated. So, when you're cooking greasy foods, you can rest assured knowing that the bad air goes out and fresh air comes in.

As mentioned, make-up air is the air that has been drawn from the outside. But how does this happen?

The vent hood takes the cooking air and moves it through the ductwork to the outside. The Make-Up air system will draw outside air and move it into your home. This process will dramatically improve your indoor air quality.

Some condos, apartments and smaller buildings may require make-up air systems to meet the building code.

Make-up air kits are comprised of the following parts, range hood dampeners and air pressure sensors that regulate the airflow coming into your home. These kits are attached to your ductwork, and pressure signals tell the dampener to release bad air and draw in good air.

Not only does make-up air improve the air, but it can also cool down the kitchen when you're cooking with high heat.

Make-up air kits can also replace the lost air from bathroom fans, dryers and fireplaces.
