Why Did My Furnace Stop Working?
Your furnace stopped working and it’s freezing in your home - what do you do? Here are a few things you can try to get that furnace up and running again.
Clean Your Furnace Filters
If your furnace is tuning out but not blowing out heat, it could be due to dirty air filters. Dirt, dust, hair, and other debris start to build up over time which restricts airflow and overheats the heat exchanger. It is recommended that you change your filters every three months.
Check Your Thermostat
The thermostat is considered to be the center of your heating system, and could also be the reason your furnace stopped working. Check the batteries, because when your thermostat dies, it will no longer be able to control your heating system. Make it a habit to replace your batteries once a year.
Turn On Your Furnace
This may seem simple, but did you check to see if your furnace was turned on? If your furnace has recently been checked or repaired, your HVAC repairman may have forgotten to turn your furnace back on. All furnaces have a basic power switch located on the wall or near the furnace. Check to see if it is switched to ON. Other things to check are your circuit breaker or fuse - make sure those are ON too.
Check Your Air Ducts
Have you ever experienced cold spots in your house even if heat is coming out of your vents? This could be because of your air ducts. Start by checking for handles that protrude from your ducts. Make sure they are fully open, as these handles are what control the airflow. Other possible issues could be leaking or incorrectly designed ducts.
If none of the above solutions worked, it’s time to call an HVAC professional to take a look at your furnace. Schedule an appointment and warm up today!
