Why do I need to change my air filters regularly
Posted On: January 3, 2022

During the warmer and colder months, your HVAC system works hard to keep your home comfortable. The longer your furnace and AC runs, the more often the filter needs changing. You should also change your filter more often if you have any pets. And depending on where you live, it's most likely on for long periods.

If your furnace doesn't run very often, you will only have to change your filter every 90 days. And if you have a smart thermostat, it may even remind you that it's time to change the filter.

Changing the furnace filter is essential for the following reasons.

  1. Air Quality: Air filters keep dirt and particles from the heating and cooling system and prevent dust and other allergens from entering the air in your home. The best air filters have a MERV rating between 5-12.
  2. Increases efficiency: A dirty and clogged filter prevents the heating and cooling system from running efficiently. When you change the air filter, it helps the system run smoothly.
  3. Prolong lifespan: The unit can last longer than expected when the heating and cooling system runs smoothly due to a clean filter and proper maintenance.
  4. Proper airflow: If your furnace filter is clogged, warm and cold air will not be able to reach the areas of your home.

To change the air filter, locate the filter, remove the old filter, and replace it with a new one. Most filters have a directional arrow to show you where they go in. Furnace filters only go in one direction: the direction of airflow.

It's also essential to select the proper filter size for your unit. Getting one too large will not prevent dust and other particles from entering the unit or the air. And getting one too small will force the furnace to work too hard.

If you cannot find the proper filter size on the old filter, you can always use a measuring tape.

When you change your air filter every 90 days or less, you are not only improving the airflow in your home but also preventing your furnace from overworking. Annual maintenance will also prolong your furnace's lifespan.
