York Appliance Troubleshooting

Comfort is More than a Feeling, It's a Promise. At YORK, ensuring your comfort is at the heart of everything we do, and everything we make. That's why YORK home comfort systems are built for the way you live, to be more efficient, easier to use and more reliable. Let's get started!

Air Conditioner Troubleshooting

York air conditioner not cooling
The air filter may be clogged so airflow through the air con is hindered.
It may be having dirty condenser coils- debris impedes overall cooling performance.
The unit has a faulty compressor.
The run capacitor is having issues or it’s blown making the compressor not to run.
You have an improper thermostat setting or it might be defective (the entire component).
Your AC may have insufficient refrigerant.
The unit has a problematic board (culprits could be its main control board, temperature control board, etc.).

York blower motor problems
Check if it’s receiving power– test whether current is reaching the motor as lack of power will mean it never runs. Troubleshoot the power supply system if so or proceed to step 2.
Check if it’s burned out– If it has power but still won’t work, it’s probably burnt. The only solution is replacement.
Check if the blower fan is experiencing difficulties spinning– your blower motor may not work as desired if the blower fan is obstructed by something. It will make a humming sound in this case and you must remove whatever is blocking the fan’s spinning path to eliminate the problem.

York air conditioner fan not working
Test if the fan motor has power. If yes, move to the remaining steps…
Check if you’re having a bad capacitor (the capacitor supplies power to the fan motor and it could have malfunctioned).
Check for loose or even a broken belt and repair, if necessary.
Check if the motor is itself burnt out and replace.

York air conditioner not turning on
Check if the power cord is in good condition and supplying power (replace if not).
Check if the circuit breaker has tripped and reset it.
Wash the air filter (again!) if dirty.
Work on the thermostat- check the settings (and change) or potential defects (and replace).
Clean the AC drain pan if dirty.
Check if the fuse in your York air conditioner has blown and replace.

York rooftop unit troubleshooting
Clean or change the filters– No matter your model, always start by installing a new filter (disposable types) or cleaning the filter (permanent types).
Clean condenser coils surfaces– after filters, dirt should be cleared off the condenser coil to restore required operation.
Check the thermostat- a bad thermostat setting could be causing your cooling woes and you should make sure that it’s properly set.

York central air conditioner troubleshooting
Faulty contactor- this part sends voltage to your condensing unit and its failure could affect cooling. Test it for continuity with a multimeter and replace if necessary.
Bad dual run capacitor– the fan motor won’t operate properly or will completely refuse to work if this has issues. Replace if you notice it’s leaking or bulging.
Defective condenser fan motor– the capacitor may have failed or the motor itself. Replace the affected component.
Failed compressor- this should only be checked if all else fails because it’s often misdiagnosed. Test it for continuity and replace if none.

Furnace Troubleshooting

York Furnace not heating
The igniter gets very hot and glows bright orange to light the gas burner. If the igniter fails or cracks, the furnace won’t heat. To determine if the igniter is faulty, remove the igniter and inspect it for cracks. If the igniter is cracked, replace it. If the igniter is not cracked, use a multimeter to test the igniter for continuity. If the igniter does not have continuity, replace it.

York Furnace is noisy or loud
The blower wheel blows air out of the furnace and through the house. The blower wheel is attached to the blower motor shaft with a set screw. If the set screw is loose, the blower wheel will wobble on the motor shaft, and the wheel will be noisy as it turns. Check the set screw to ensure that it is properly tightened. Next, inspect the wheel for damage. If the blower wheel is damaged, replace it.

York Furnace starts then stops
The flame sensor monitors the burner to detect whether or not a flame is present. If the flame sensor is defective, it might fail to detect a flame. If the flame sensor does not detect a flame, the control board will shut off voltage to the gas valve to prevent the furnace from heating. Sometimes, if the flame sensor is dirty, it will fail to detect a flame. Try cleaning the flame sensor with a fine abrasive pad. If the furnace still doesn’t heat, replace the flame sensor.

York Furnace blower not running
The blower motor blows air through the return vent, past the heat exchanger, and into the home’s venting. First, make sure that power is getting to the motor. If power is getting to the blower motor, but the motor does not run, the motor may be burned out. If the blower motor is burned out, replace it. If the blower motor hums, check the blower fan to ensure that it spins freely. If the blower fan is unobstructed but does not spin freely, replace the blower motor.

York Furnace blower runs all the time
The control board has relays that regulate the voltage to each component in the furnace. If the relay that controls the blower motor fails while it is closed, it will send continuous voltage to the blower motor, causing the motor to run continuously. If the control board is at fault, replace it.

Heat Pump Troubleshooting

Heat Pump is Not Cooling
Thermostat problem - You have to check to see that the thermostat is set to cool mode. If the thermostat is set to cool correctly, then there may be a problem with the thermostat not reading the temperature correctly or an electrical problem stops the element from communicating the system. If you are unable to identify the cause or fix it, call a professional.

Broken reversing valve - If your unit is running, but hot is coming from vents, there could be a problem with your reversing valve. Reversing valve reverses the refrigerant and allows it to act as both a heater and an air conditioner. If this valve is defective, it needs to be replaced. You can take the help of a technician for replacing this valve.

Components are dirty - If the air coming out of your vents is lukewarm, that is a sign that your components are dirty. Go outside and clean off the heat pump so it's free of any debris and check the air filter to see if it needs to be changed.

Refrigerant charge is low - Again you need to inspect the refrigerant levels. If they are too low or if there is any leak, your system will unable to cool your house. Fix leaks if there are any existed and increase the levels.

Thermostat problems
First of all, you should check that your thermostat has set at the right modes. If every setting is correct, the problem could be a miscalibration. Due to this miscalibration, your thermostat read the temperatures incorrectly, Although, there may be an electrical problem that stops the thermostat from communicating with the heat pump. In these cases, you need to contact a professional for servicing.

Power Issues
Sometimes, a tripped circuit breaker is caused for this problem. Make sure all the breakers are in the proper positions. If the circuit breaker is tripped, you have to reset it to avoid electrical issues. Also, check for other electrical issues. If you have a minimum knowledge of electrical components repairing, then you can fix the problem immediately. If not, contact an electrician or a professional.

Defective starter capacitor
Once listen to your heat pump unit. If you hear a faint clicking noise, then consider that your system is supposed to be turning on and the problem is likely with the starter capacitor. A starter capacitor is used to transmit the electrical charge that turns on the motors. So, you have to check for the starter capacitor is broken. If so, you need to replace it.

Broken reversing valve
As the name indicates, the reverse valve allows the unit to work as both an air conditioner as well as a heater by reversing the refrigerant direction. If you start the heat pump when you need cool air, but it produces heat, then it is likely caused by this valve. If it is damaged.

Heat Pump Running Constantly
York heat pumps are designed to operate much more gradually than a furnace. If the weather is cold, then there may be a possibility of your system can run near constantly without being an issue.

Check the thermostat. Make sure it is set correctly. If there is miscalibration with your thermostat or wiring issue, you can get this type of problem.

See if the compressor contractor is broken. The compressor contactor will able to control how much power goes to the heat pump system. So, your unit runs constantly all the time when the compressor contractor is broken. You need to be done the replacement process to fix this issue.

System is blocked
The heat pump pulls the heat from the air outside to your house. When the airflow is blocked by ice, snow, leaves, or any other type of debris. it's hard for your heat pump to do the job perfectly. If anything is blocked in the system, you have to clean the heat pump and clear away any debris that may be blocking the airflow way.

Dirty air filter
Air filters are used to catch dirt and debris in the system. When too much dust or dirt builds up on the filter, it may block airflow to the compressor. The compressor heats the air in the system. Check the air filter and replace it with a new one if it is dirty.

The refrigerant charge is low
If the refrigerant levels are too low, likely from a leak, your York heat pump system will struggle to bring enough heat indoors for heating your room. Hence, you have to check the refrigerant levels. If the levels are too low, the heat pumps need to be recharged.

I had a York Affinity 8 series installed in 2011 in southern California (i.e. it doesn’t get heavy use). I had the system maintained annually by professionals. In year 4 the system failed to kick on. It was identified that 3 different parts had failed simultaneously. While the parts were covered under the warranty, labor to replace the parts cost 25% of the original unit price! GASP! I called York several times to see if they’d do anything to offset such a high cost as this points to poor quality and potential for future problem, but they repeatedly declined. Buyer Beware!

I’ve lived in my house for 25 years now. The old ac had been around for about the same time and had gotten slow over time so I had to replace it. I bought York because my son recommended it to me and so far I like how it works. It is so quiet and does not need to stay on for long to cool the house properly so the utility bill also remains at a reasonable figure.

I have been selling and installing York/JCI equipment for decades. We have installed thousands, and as an authorized dealer, we are trained by the factory and stay on top of all the new equipment install requirements. Our warranty program is in two parts. 10 year parts, which does not include labor costs, and then part two is offered at a small additional charge, which includes parts, labor, and anything else needed to make the repairs or replacement of the faulty equipment. When installed properly, these unit simply do not have problems. Out of over 5,000 systems we have had 4 actual warranties, which is an unheard of low percentage industry wide. Each contractor is obligated to explain the system warranties and what is available to them to be sure to have all the correct information. Each review I have seen on this system is of issues that were avoidable if installed or managed correctly by the dealer. True York dealers that do the job right just don't have these issues.

I installed a York Affinity heat pump at my cottage, and it has not worked
I installed a York Affinity heat pump at my cottage, and it has not worked at all in the two years since it was installed. Virtually every part has been replaced and my power bill was over $9000 year to year. Keep in mind that the cottage is not occupied during the winter and the temperature is kept at 50°F. The consumer relations support center has been a useless waste of time and has only served to increase my frustration and anger as a result of having this piece of absolute junk installed at my house. DO NOT buy a system from this company. I cannot stress enough how poorly my system has preformed at my cottage.

I live in Kentucky, and had a York air-handler and heat-pump installed at our home in January 2017. I used a “family owed with family values” company to install this air-handler and heat-pump. We spent around $8,000.00 on the install and upgrades from our old “oil furnace” to this new system.. We have had some very cold weather this year, and we have had SEVERAL issues with this new system. In the past two months alone I have had a service tech at my home 6 times, because the system is just not working! The heat-pump won’t run I show on aux heat, but it’s blowing cold air. After having service techs in and out of the house the past few months. I have heard so many stories from these techs about what the issues are it’s becoming ridiculous. One guy was actually here for two hours to tell me there a “wire had come loose” REALLY?? NO IT DIDN’T! Two days after the guy “put the wire back” cam. I had to have someone else come because guess what… you got it the system wasn’t working! The next person came(who by the way is the only person I think who knows anything at all and he is just a service tech they better keep ahold of that one!) told me that the heating elements were completely burned up all three of them, and that they were not working, and probably had not worked in a few days! This “part” was replaced on 3/27/18. Then on 4/16/18 the system again has stopped working! I called the service company on the Sunday 4/16/18 it was 34 degrees outside by the way, and the response I received from them and there 24 hour emergency call center was to turn on my emergency heat! YES my emergency heat that cost a small fortune to run! After a short argument with the owner he then advised me that they would NOT come and fix the furnace because of the argument over the phone! The reason for the “argument” was because when I spoke to the owner of the shop he started telling me that they have NOT been to my home a-lot! (I guess 6 times is not a lot in 2 months it is to me, but I guess we have different standards!) He then told me that I had gone a “good year” before they ever had to come to my house! (which by the way is completely incorrect!) Seriously! I am not sure what kind of companies I am dealing with but as for what I can tell right now the YORK system and the company I picked to do my work are both “failing” I would never recommend this SYSTEM nor the company I had install this system! (which I would not name on this site as I feel it’s not professional!) Has anyone heard of any recalls on an electric system what is this about a lawsuit, is that just for the gas systems? I am going to try and contact York personally to address my issues with the system to see if they have anyone they recommend to come out, and take a look.. I am sure this will fall on “deaf ears”, but I have to do something I am completely frustrated with all of this! I am interested in this “lawsuit” and the details to see if this is something that may be going on with my system as well.

I am happy with this purchase because after buying a few appliances that kept breaking down I sort of got used to poor quality. York, however, has changed my perception of these brands. If you take your time to do your research on what you want to buy then there is very little chance of being disappointed. Thanks to York my house is comfortable again.

I bought this house less than 5 years ago. York Split System 2.5 Ton Heat Pump was 2 years old when I bought the house. In less than 5 years, 2 motors, filter dryer repaired, 5 times called for Freon, after 5th time they found the leak…Condenser Coil. Been waiting 4 weeks for “delay in parts” without air conditioning…in FLORIDA and they cannot tell me when they will receive them. Have had 4 different technicians, all of which told me getting parts for YORK is not easy. Who has time for this!!!

My furnace installation went as smooth as could be for having my whole unit
My furnace installation went as smooth as could be for having my whole unit die a few days after Christmas. It's quiet and efficient, and seems to be working out beautifully. It's heating my 2600 square foot home that was built in the 1860s. My bill has not gone up at all and I turned the thermostat up higher than I had it before. The unit is much much smaller than my old one too, which is a nice bonus. I'm very happy with the financing and payment schedule offered also.

It’s surprising how many people are complaining about York air conditioners. I feel bad for them because it must be a problem with the installation. I read about the problems that can be caused by poor installation online and made sure I got someone who could be trusted with the job. It’s 2 years down the line now and nothing is the matter, the ac functions just as well as it did when I bought it.
