3 year old LG bottom freezer refrigerator stopped cooling

3 year old LG bottom freezer refrigerator stopped cooling
Posted On: August 5, 2023

Purchased July 30,2020.

Noticed the freezer was thawing last night.

This morning I realized the whole unit wasn't cooling at all.

Downloaded the app to run diagnostics and it says it is working properly…second pic.

Well the spoiled food in the fridge and freezer beg to differ.

It has a high pitched noise coming from it all the time but no clue what it means.

Any ideas? Fridge is currently at 65 degrees and that is plugged in and working properly according to the app.

Question from user beautifuleagle83 at Appliances at reddit.

Answer:

The first thing I would check: pull out fridge and remove panel on lower back.

It will have air vents and should be easily removed.

Have a look, if there is a great deal of dust, take a vacuum and clean it out as best as possible.

Likely cause of issue- too much dust can clog the coils and reduce cooling capacity.

Second thing, briefly touch the large spherical tank, that is the compressor, if it is hot to the touch it is cooling properly, If it is lukewarm or cold the compressor may have failed.

Third thing, there will be a small fan directly next to the compressor whose job it is to remove heat from the system through the vents, if this fan is turning but is making noise it may need a cleaning and a spritz of WD-40, poor fan performance and clogged vents can also lead to poor compressor performance or failure.

Fourth thing, If none of those seem the issue, check vents in the back of the freezer, check for airflow or ice buildup, excessive ice buildup can reduce air flow which will compound upon itself.

Fifth thing, check the gaskets around the doors to ensure the door to the freezer and fridge are both sealing properly.

Last thing, if no ice buildup and airflow okay, maybe a problem with freezers thermostat or defrost timer, or potentially the control board.

There are in-depth YouTube videos regarding all of these steps that you can look at for reference if needed.

Final note, with a fridge only 3 years old my first guess is the dust buildup on the coils and the compressor fan.
