Common issues with furnaces
Posted On: November 22, 2021

Just like any other appliance in your home, furnaces can run into any number of issues. And depending on the age of your furnace and how often it runs, it's possible to run into more than one issue during its lifespan.

Common issues with furnaces can include but not be limited to the following.

  1. Fan constantly running: If you find that the fan in your furnace keeps running, the issue could lie with your thermostat. Check the fan settings to see what they are set. You can also check the battery to see if it's low.
  2. Filters: For the furnace to run efficiently, you should change your furnace filter every three months or less, depending on whether you have pets or not.
  3. Pilot light: A change in your furnace's pilot light, whether flickering or an odd color, could indicate a build-up of carbon monoxide. Call a furnace technician immediately if this happens.
  4. Cracked heat exchanger: This issue is caused when a furnace filter isn't changed or when the home is overheated.
  5. Frayed blower belt: If you notice a high-pitched squeal coming from your furnace, it is most likely caused by a damaged blower belt. Replacing it will fix the issue.
  6. Cycling: A furnace that runs continually may be caused by a clogged filter, inadequate airflow, or the furnace is running too high or too low. A furnace that keeps running can lead to a higher bill.
  7. Furnace not blowing air: There could be a few issues why your furnace isn't blowing air. One of them is a blocked blower, try and clear any debris away. If you notice a flashing red light, then you will need to contact a technician.
  8. Strange noises: If you hear a scraping sound, then there could be loose bearings. Rattling noises are most likely due to the furnace panels becoming loose, and popping noises are caused by the ductwork. Any of these issues require servicing by a technician.

Whether the issue is big or small, leaving furnace repairs up to a professional is best. You don't want to get into something that could make your situation worse and cause further damage to your furnace. That is where Appliance Helpers comes in.
