Dos and donts of using an oven
Posted On: November 29, 2021

When using your oven, you probably aren't thinking about what you should or shouldn't do, especially if you have been cooking for a long time. But no matter how long you've been cooking, there are a few things you should be mindful of when using your oven.

  1. Clean right away: After you have finished cooking your meal, you should clean any messes. Tackling spills and head-on will make things easier when it's time to do the big oven clean and prevent any fire hazards. Be sure to keep any knobs clean as well.
  2. Avoid the self-clean before a big meal: While the self-clean feature is a bonus and saves the hassle of using chemicals. However, you should avoid using it before a big meal as self-clean uses a lot of energy which could potentially cause the appliance to burn out.
  3. Use middle racks: When cooking, try and use the center racks as it helps with the circulation. If you cook too close to the bottom or top, the oven will not maintain a constant temperature.
  4. Don't open the door: While it may be tempting to open the door to check on the progress of whatever you are cooking. It's better to use the oven light instead. Frequent opening and closing of the oven door results in loss of heat and longer cooking times.
  5. Use a timer: Using the oven timer prevents you from forgetting about what is cooking, which can lead to burnt food and, depending on how long, fire.
  6. Never store pans in the oven: While it may seem like a good idea, you should never use your oven as storage as you may forget about them the next time you turn on the oven. Not only can you ruin your pots or pans, but you can also burn yourself when taking them out.
  7. If you smell gas...Don't use it: A gas leak is a severe safety issue. If you suspect your gas oven leaks, make sure all burners are turned off and contact the professionals. Never use the stove if you suspect a gas leak is present.

These are just a few things you should keep in mind when using your oven. And when it's time to repair or replace your oven, contact Appliance Helpers, and we can help you find an appliance specialist in your area. Visit our website for more information and how to get in touch with us.
