GE Café electric oven not getting hot enough
Posted On: July 28, 2023

Have a ge cafe gas range with electric oven.

Range is perfectly fine but the oven doesn't go past 200° F.

It preheats and says it reaches 350° but it's not close.

Any advice before I call a repair tech out to overcharge me? I'm pretty handy when it comes to fixing appliances but I've never dealt with one like this before.

Question from user martyswp at Appliances at reddit.

Answer:

It's great to hear that you're handy with fixing appliances! Before calling a repair technician, there are a few troubleshooting steps you can try to diagnose and possibly fix the issue with your GE Cafe gas range's electric oven not reaching the correct temperature:

  1. Check the oven temperature sensor: The temperature sensor inside the oven might be malfunctioning, causing the oven to not reach the desired temperature. You can use an ohmmeter to test the sensor's resistance at room temperature. Refer to your oven's user manual for the correct resistance value at room temperature. If the sensor's reading is off, you may need to replace it.

  2. Calibrate the oven: Some ovens allow you to adjust or calibrate the temperature settings. Check your user manual to see if your oven has this feature and follow the instructions to calibrate it. This can help bring the oven's temperature closer to the desired level.

  3. Check the oven heating element: If the heating element is faulty or damaged, it may not be able to reach the correct temperature. Inspect the heating element for any visible signs of damage or disconnection. If you find any issues, you might need to replace the heating element.

  4. Test the oven control board: The control board is responsible for regulating the oven's temperature. If it's faulty, it may not be sending the correct signals to the oven's heating elements. Testing and diagnosing the control board can be a bit more complicated, so if you're not comfortable doing this, it might be best to seek professional help.

  5. Check for obstructions: Make sure there are no obstructions or debris inside the oven that could be affecting its performance.

  6. Verify the gas supply: If your gas range uses gas for the cooktop burners and electricity for the oven, ensure that the gas supply to the oven is not impeded in any way.

Before attempting any of the above steps, make sure to turn off the power to the oven to avoid any risk of electric shock.

If you've tried the above troubleshooting steps and the issue persists, or if you're unsure about any of the steps, it's best to contact a professional repair technician. They can accurately diagnose the problem and have the expertise to fix it efficiently. Be sure to inquire about the service cost upfront to avoid any surprises regarding overcharging.

Remember that safety is paramount, and if you feel uncomfortable or uncertain about any repair task, it's better to leave it to the professionals. Good luck with your oven troubleshooting!
