How to wash a blanket
Posted On: August 30, 2021

There is nothing better than fresh, clean sheets and blankets. Not only does it make your bed smell nice, but it also leads to a better night's sleep.

However, we don't stop and think about how to wash them. We throw the sheets and blanket in the washer with some detergent and let the machine do the rest.

But did you know there is a proper way to wash blankets? Here are a few tips for when it's time to clean your blanket.

  • First off, check to make sure your blanket is machine washable. Most household machines can wash blankets weighing up to twenty pounds. And some blankets like wool are dry clean only.
  • Place the blanket inside the machine and add the right amount of detergent for your load.
  • Select the gentle cycle on the machine, then the cold wash setting for fleece blankets and warm for cotton and linen.
  • During the rinse cycle, add a liquid softener.
  • Once the washing machine has finished, it's best to hang the blanket on a cloth line to prevent any fabric from pilling. However, if that's not possible, especially in the colder months, you can place the blanket in the dryer and set it to low or medium heat.

By following these steps, your blankets should last longer. But remember, always check to make sure the blanket is machine washable. Some blankets like weighted blankets are not recommended for the washing machine.

If you find that your blanket is too big for your washing machine and it comes out soaking wet even after the spin cycle, it's probably best to head to a laundry mat as that means your blanket is too heavy for your machine and a heavy load can lead to more wear and tear on your washer.
