Air Conditioner Troubleshooting

Indoor airflow is not adequate
Check your furnace air filter to ensure it is clean and not dirty or clogged—this could be restricting air flow. Also make certain there is a proper supply of air coming through your home’s vents. Adjust all registers so they are open—if you find air not moving through all vents there may be a block in your duct work.

A/C unit is not the correct size
An A/C unit that is too small will have continuous run cycles. An A/C unit that is too big will have short run cycles. Both of these issues will eventually cause your HVAC system to prematurely fail. Confirm you are using a unit that is the appropriate size for the space you are cooling by contacting an HVAC professional.

Outside compressor/condenser unit is obstructed
Remove any brush or debris from the area surrounding the unit—a good rule of thumb is to have nothing within 24”, including building walls and/or fences. Outside units require proper cool air flow in order to function correctly.

Power to unit is disconnected or loose
Locate the plug for the A/C unit and ensure it is properly plugged in to the electrical outlet. If power is not restored, check the building electrical panel to ensure a fuse has not blown, or a breaker tripped.

Blown fuse or tripped breaker
Replace the fuse or reset the breaker. If the fuse blows again, or the circuit breaker re-trips, leave it OFF.

Thermostat is not set correctly
Ensure the thermostat has working batteries and is operational. Turn your thermostat to its lowest temperature setting to see if the A/C unit turns ON. If your unit turns ON the temperature setting was set too high on your COOL setting. Set the temperature for lower than the actual room temperature is showing. If your unit does not turn ON there may be an issue with either your thermostat, or A/C unit.

Banging noise could mean a broken or loose part
Potentially a connecting rod, piston pin, or crankshaft inside the air compressor has broken or come loose, or possibly the compressor requires total replacement.

Humming due to loose or unattached parts
Loose parts, electrical issues, and loose wiring can all cause humming. To avoid damaging your A/C unit, turn the unit’s power OFF.

Screaming or loud whistling means a refrigerant leak or high pressure within the compressor
Immediately turn OFF the unit.

Overflow pan has a hole or crack
Check each corner and edge of the pan for a hole or crack—these can be repaired with an epoxy glue as a temporary fix. Damaged pans should be replaced.

Clogged filter
A dirty filter will cause ice to form on the unit’s evaporator coils-when it melts it will drip. Replace the filter and set a reminder to change it every 1-2 months while the A/C unit is in use.

Plugged condensate line
A plugged line will cause water to back up and fill the overflow pan. Try using a wet/dry vacuum, or a hand pump made for clearing A/C condensate lines, to suck or blow the line clear. To prevent build up from mildew or algae, pour a little bleach down the line every 4-6 months.

Furnace Troubleshooting

Not heating?
Possibly the electrical system that provides power to your furnace has shorted or blown the power switch. Reset your Keeprite furnace’s circuit breaker. If it is blown, you’ll have to replace it.
The furnace’s igniter could be cracked or faulty. Check if the part has cracks. If it does, then replace the igniter. If it doesn’t, use a multimeter to test for continuity.

Cycling irregularly?
The thermostat of your furnace might be adjusting incorrectly. If your thermostat has an adjustable calibration scale, adjust the heat anticipator. If this does not address the problem or you don’t have a scale, you may have to replace the thermostat.

Not blowing hot air?
The blower motor may have burnt out. If this doesn’t seem likely, then the connecting belt may have broken. Test to see if power is reaching the motor. If it does, but nothing is running, the motor has likely failed and needs replacing. If the motor runs but air doesn’t move, the connecting belt has probably broken. You’ll have to replace the belt.

Blowing too much air?
If the relay that regulates the blower motor on the control board has failed, it will continually send voltage to the motor. Replace the control board.
The contact that controls the blower motor on your thermostat may be stuck closed. The result is that the blower motor will run continuously. Use a multimeter to check for continuity. If the issue is the thermostat, replace it.

Starting and then stopping shortly after?
Your furnace’s flame sensor monitors the burner, detecting if a flame is present. It's either defective, or there is debris, and won't be able to detect a flame. If dirty, carefully clean the sensor using a fine abrasive pad. If not, replace the flame sensor.

KeepRite has been keeping Canadian homes warm for more than 50 years, and in that time they’ve earned a reputation for reliable and high-quality products. They have a range of models available depending on your needs, including more affordable standard-efficiency options with ratings of 80 percent AFUE and higher (though these are meant for the USA market), high-efficiency models with ratings up to 98 percent AFUE, and options for both gas and propane furnaces. Beyond that, each unit is tested before being delivered, and many come with a 20-year warranty on the heat exchanger.

A reputable company in my town installed the furnace; something I attribute to its reliability four years after installation. The warranty terms were quite favorable, so I decided to take a full ten-year warranty. This has greatly contributed to the low running and maintenance costs. Except for a few issues, last year, which was covered by the warranty. The system has been running quite smoothly.

I had this unit installed after the old unit was hit by lightning. I am not sure if I paid too much or that was just about the right price. So far, the system has not had any issues. It runs efficiently and keeps the down cooled down, just the way I like it. What I liked about it most is how energy efficient. The contractor who did the installation job told me it could reach a 21-seer efficiency under the right conditions.

The price I paid was inclusive of installation fees for the new duct system in the home. This was after the contractor informed me the old system was just too inefficient. In addition, the price was inclusive of all the necessary permits. After the three years, with regular checkups, the system is still working fine.

I got this unit installed recently. I am not sure but I think I paid a fair price, based on what others have paid. The contractor included a ten-warranty for parts and labor as part of the deal. In addition, he offered a brand new outdoors foundation and a thermostat that is programmable. I am satisfied with Ameristar so far.

This furnace has worked quite well for my three-bedroom house in Duluth. Even in the middle of winter. I have seen a forty percent drop in my average gas bills since the system became operational. I have been using the furnace for seven years now. During that time, I have only had one crucial service call to replace the gas inlet valve. Thanks to my warranty, regular change of air filters have ensured the system continues to run efficiently.

I decided to take the system with a five-year warranty. This is especially great if one is not planning to stay in an area for long. Although, there is an option for a decade-long warranty I do not plan to stay that long. The system has so far provided reliable service in the two years since installation, something which is of great benefit to me.

This unit was actually installed by my aunt. On the winter of 2012, when she installed it. Despite the house, being old and poorly insulated. This powerful furnace still managed to keep the house warm enough. My only regret is that I live so far away. As a result, I will not be able to carry the furnace with me.

My first furnace came with the house. As a result, when it started getting noisy and blowing cold air, barely one year after I moved in. I did not want to sink my money into something I knew little about. Consequently, after some research, I settled on buying the York TM9V. Its 96 percent efficiency rating meant that the upfront installation cost and purchase were a bit high. However, I expect to make great savings from the high efficiency of this furnace. It has been two great years with this furnace and it has no problems at all. I expect it to stay this way for at least another twenty years.
