No One Actually Wants a Speed Queen Washer - Dryer…
Obviously everyone's going to get crazy upset about this post because everyone in this sub (including me) knows that Speed Queen makes a fantastic product. But the reality is… the average consumer absolutely does not want a Speed Queen… in fact most likely they have never even heard of it. And when they do hear the name they probably assume it's some type of “generic/off-brand” appliance.
The reality is that Speed Queen has a cult like following among people that actually have knowledge about Speed Queen… that's it.
Speed Queen is absolutely nothing to look at when it comes to modern design, they all look like they are stuck in the 80's. They offer almost no modern day features like (wifi, auto dispensing, cool touchscreens, etc). Everyone has their opinions on those new technologies but in reality the average consumer loves them; we live in a tech focused world now!.
And lastly Speed Queen's pricing is exceptionally premium. We're talking about $1,300 for their middle TR5 line and $2400 for their front load model! Consumers can get so many other options with so many features for way under $1,300.
The average consumer does not care about reliability anymore. That's the reality of appliance sales today. They care about features, looks, and price. No one wants their washing machine to last 20 years anymore because in about 10 years some new technology is going to come out and will want to upgrade.
Question from user zachty22 at Appliances at reddit.com.
Answer:
There is a market for it, granted not as large as other brands. No question, the product is expensive and basic. There is a segment of the market that appreciates - wants well made simple product. The old they dont make things like they used to! crowd. Theres enough demand to keep them in business. Maytag probably gets the bulk of this market but Speed Queen captures some of it. To your point this is not for the average customer, however, some people do want their product to last a very long time and are willing to pay more for it which is why Speed Queen is still in business.
