Pros and Cons of a Stackable Wash and Dryer
Posted On: September 8, 2020

To some, the laundry room is practically a second home. However, when moving into a new home you have a big decision to make. Should you get a stackable washer and dryer set along with your other units?

While space probably isn’t an issue, there is still plenty other to consider, including specific laundry needs, certain features, and energy efficiency. Stackable washer and dryer sets may be popular among homeowners, but that doesn’t necessarily mean they suit your expectations. It’s important to consider the pros and cons of a stackable unit before purchasing your new washer and dryer.

The Pros
1. Great for small spaces
Even when the units are sold separately, stackable washer and dryer sets are designed to accommodate small spaces. If you don’t have a laundry room, or if you’re trying to save space for storage, a stackable unit may be the better choice. Since it only takes up around two feet of space, this set can easily fit into the closet for better aesthetic.

2. Easier on clothes
A top-loading washer utilizes a stainless steel agitator in the centre of the tub to move your clothes around during a wash cycle. While this is effective for cleaning, your clothes take a beating while being washed. Alternatively, a side-loading machine tumbles clothes in a concentrated solution of water and detergent for an even and gentle wash.

3. Flexibility
If you like to constantly arrange your living spaces, stackable washer and dryer sets are a flexible option when it comes to changing up the laundry room. The majority of stackable appliances can also operate side by side just as well, all it takes is a few tools and some knowledge about washers and dryers.

The Cons
1. Smaller capacity
Naturally, compact machines have a smaller capacity than their top-loading counterparts. It’s possible to find a stackable unit that’s full size, but of course, you’ll have to pay more. Going that route also means the unit will take up more space, sometimes negating the benefits of a stackable unit.

2. More expensive
A compact front-loading washer may be small, but it can still set you back quite a bit. A small stackable unit could cost you anywhere between $750 and $2400, and that excludes the dryer. For some homeowners, the investment is worth space and energy they can save around the house.

3. Not as fancy
There are usually fewer features available on stackable models, and you’ll have to make do with the standard settings. Compact models are specially designed for a more straightforward approach to cleaning and drying. You can find stackable units with all these additional features with a much heavier price tag.
