Refrigerator Food Storage Hacks: How to Keep Food Fresh For Longer
Posted On: November 17, 2020

There’s nothing worse than throwing away perfectly good food, which could have been avoided if using proper storage techniques. Whether it be produce, dairy, or meat, there are some easy tricks you can follow to keep your food fresher for longer!

Leftover Food

Make it a habit to store your leftovers in an airtight, leak-proof container. Refrigerate your food within two hours of cooking, so it’s not sitting out for too long. Try dividing your leftovers into smaller containers to help your food cool faster. Avoid refrigerating food in cans, as the residual metal on the rim can leach into your food and leave a metallic taste.

Meat and Fish Products

Place meat, fish, and poultry in the coldest spot of your fridge, ideally in its own drawer. Often times, this is at the bottom of your fridge. Keep all fresh meat, fish, and poultry in its original store wrappings, as re-wrapping your meat can increase the risk of exposing your food to harmful bacteria.

Dairy Products

Make it a habit to rotate older dairy items in the front, so they can be used before its expiration date. Dairy items, such as cottage cheese, yogurt, eggs, sour cream, milk, and cream, should be left in the containers they came in. As a last note, don’t store your milk in the door, as this is considered to be the warmest spot in your fridge.

Fruits and Vegetable Products

Fruits and vegetables should only be stored with their own kind, as certain produce gives off gases which can cause others to deteriorate. Fruits and vegetables that are more likely to dry out should be stored in unsealed plastic bags to maintain a moist environment. Also, do not wash produce before refrigerating it, as the moisture can cause your produce to mold and rot more quickly.

Follow the above tips to keep your food fresher for longer!
